About The Position

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) is seeking a Senior Staff Attorney or Staff Attorney dedicated to combating white supremacy. This role, within the Inclusion and Anti-Extremism (IAE) Advocacy and Litigation Team (ALIT), involves investigating, developing, and litigating cases against hate groups and white supremacists. The attorney will have the opportunity to work on cases and campaigns that vindicate and advance the rights of communities targeted by hate groups, including communities of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, and others.

Requirements

At least one (1) year of federal court civil litigation or comparable experience post law school (for Staff Attorney I-II).
At least six (6) years of federal court civil litigation or comparable experience post law school (for Senior Staff I-IV).
Membership in good standing of at least one state bar in the United States, preferably Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida, or Washington, D.C.
J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
Demonstrated experience and/or interest in litigating in federal and state courts at the trial and appellate levels.
Experience working with community organizations, grassroots campaigns and impacted communities, particularly in the South, to dismantle white supremacy.
Demonstrated interest and commitment to dismantling white supremacy and representing victims of hate and extremism.
Ability to synthesize complex issues and communicate them effectively to diverse audiences.
Demonstrated ability to conduct legal research and factual investigations.
Ability to take calculated risks in crafting and executing strategies to move litigation and other advocacy forward.
Demonstrated ability to work with others, including both internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to think innovatively and creatively about claims and causes of action to combat white supremacy and extremism.
Exceptional communication skills and ability to communicate persuasively to a variety of audiences through writing and speaking.
Demonstrates an understanding of and a commitment to SPLC's mission, vision and values.

Responsibilities

Draft briefs, motions, memos, written discovery, and other documents in support of litigation.
Conduct depositions and represent clients in court.
Represent SPLC in various forums, including federal and state courts, community groups and coalitions, media outlets, and federal and state agencies.
Develop new cases and campaigns in consultation with SPLC staff and community partners.
Investigate, gather information, and interview clients and witnesses.
Respond to requests for legal assistance.
Research and write legal memos and briefs on complex legal and factual questions.
Train and mentor legal staff and interns (for Senior Staff Attorneys).
Perform other duties as required or assigned.
