Senior Staff Hardware Engineer - Optical

Marvell Technology•Santa Clara, CA
•$134,390 - $201,300

About The Position

As a Senior Staff Hardware Engineer, you will lead hardware platform development for integrated optical transceiver engines supporting high-speed fiber-optic communications. Your decisions will shape how advanced semiconductor devices are powered, interconnected, characterized, and prepared for production. You will translate complex electrical and system requirements into robust hardware, resolve challenging analog and RF issues, and build the platforms that enable teams to validate optical performance with confidence. This is an opportunity to combine hands-on engineering with technical leadership at a company advancing optical connectivity for AI and cloud infrastructure. You will influence design direction, guide cross-functional decisions, and see your work progress from the first schematic to production readiness.

Requirements

  • A master’s degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering with 3+ years of relevant experience, or a bachelor’s degree with 5+ years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ownership of complex O2E and E2O hardware development, with the technical judgment and cross-functional leadership expected at the Senior Staff level.
  • Proven experience designing optical transceiver module and test platform hardware design for testing, power delivery, or high-speed communications.
  • Strong fundamentals in analog and RF signaling, PCB design and fabrication, schematic capture, and hardware interfaces.
  • Experience evaluating signal integrity and power integrity using tools such as PowerDC, PowerSI, ADS, HFSS, or Clarity 3D.
  • Proficiency with schematic capture and layout environments, including relevant Cadence tools or comparable platforms.
  • Familiarity with communication and control protocols such as SPI, I2C, I3C, SPMI, and UART.
  • Hands-on experience using oscilloscopes, VNAs/PNAs, signal generators, and electronic loads to characterize and troubleshoot hardware.
  • Experience developing automation or analysis tools using Python, C++, and/or MATLAB.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to isolate issues spanning hardware, firmware, and system behavior.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to influence technical decisions across multidisciplinary, global teams.
  • The ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining design quality and execution discipline.

Nice To Haves

  • Optical transceiver engines, silicon photonics, optical DSPs, or high-speed electro-optical systems.
  • Correlating simulation results with laboratory measurements.
  • Design for manufacturing and assembly, semiconductor test hardware, and production introduction.
  • Mentoring engineers or presenting and publishing technical work.

Responsibilities

  • Lead Optical module and test platform hardware development from concept through NPI.
  • Define and deliver integrated optical engines’ test platforms, including device-under-test (DUT) cards, interposers, sockets, and handler boards.
  • Own critical design decisions.
  • Drive schematic capture, PCB and substrate layout reviews, stack-up optimization, power delivery design, and bill-of-materials management.
  • Evaluate signal integrity and power integrity simulation results, translate findings into design improvements, and verify compliance with electrical requirements.
  • Lead optical test platform hardware bring-up, electrical and optical characterization, and debugging using high-speed oscilloscopes, vector or performance network analyzers, signal generators, optical sampling scope, and electronic loads.
  • Partner with optical, silicon, and firmware engineers to investigate hardware behavior, control-loop performance, and interactions across operating conditions.
  • Develop scripts and tools using Python, C++, and/or MATLAB to improve validation efficiency, measurement repeatability, and correlation between simulations and laboratory results.
  • Select components with attention to electrical performance, availability, cost, and manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with operations, product engineering, test engineering, applications engineering, manufacturing, and business development to align requirements and support successful product introduction.
  • Provide Senior Staff technical leadership.
  • Lead design reviews, mentor engineers, communicate tradeoffs, and coordinate technical execution across global teams.
  • Document design rationale, validation methods, and results, and share insights through technical presentations and internal reports.

Benefits

  • Employee stock purchase plan with a 2-year look back
  • Family support programs
  • Robust mental health resources
  • Recognition and service awards
