About The Position

Marvell is hiring a Senior Staff Hardware Design Engineer to develop hardware platforms for coherent digital signal processors (DSPs), which enable high-speed transmission over fiber-optic networks. Based in Marvell’s Irvine, California office, this position requires onsite work five days per week; remote and hybrid arrangements are not available. The team develops reference boards and evaluation systems that demonstrate coherent optical connectivity and help customers adopt Marvell technology for hyperscale cloud and telecommunications networks. The engineer will take technical ownership of complex board-level designs across architecture, simulation, fabrication, bring-up, characterization, and validation. The work includes high-speed signal integrity for bandwidth requirements exceeding 110 GHz, power delivery and distribution, and system integration for 400G/800G-per-wavelength optical transmission. The role also involves collaboration with cross-functional engineering teams, PCB layout engineers, fabrication suppliers, and assembly partners to deliver manufacturable designs and resolve technical issues. The position offers a base pay range of $129,100–$191,030 per annum. The role is eligible for Marvell bonus and equity plans, including a new-hire equity grant and annual equity refreshers. Marvell also describes benefits spanning financial well-being, family support, mental and physical health, and recognition.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • At least five years of relevant experience in high-speed board-level hardware design.
  • Ability to independently drive complex hardware designs through development, bring-up, and validation.
  • Experience designing systems incorporating power circuits, analog circuitry, clocking, FPGAs, microprocessors, microcontrollers, memory, Ethernet, SerDes, or related technologies.
  • Proficiency in schematic capture and component library management using OrCAD CIS/CIP, Altium, or equivalent tools.
  • Experience with high-frequency signal integrity simulation using Ansys HFSS, SIwave, Keysight ADS, or equivalent tools, and characterization using vector network analyzers and time-domain reflectometry.
  • Experience with analog and power circuit design and simulation using PSpice or equivalent tools.
  • Experience working with PCB layout engineers and board manufacturers to establish component placement, layer stack-ups, routing constraints, and fabrication requirements.
  • Hands-on expertise in board bring-up, testing, characterization, and failure analysis using digital multimeters, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and related laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to correlate simulations with measured results, explain discrepancies, and turn findings into effective design improvements.
  • Clear technical communication, thorough documentation, and effective collaboration across engineering teams and external suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Take technical ownership of complex board-level designs from architecture and simulation through bring-up, characterization, and validation.
  • Develop reference boards and evaluation systems supporting 400G/800G-per-wavelength optical transmission, including power delivery, control, clocking, high-speed I/O, and form-factor requirements.
  • Architect, simulate, and characterize high-speed interconnects and signal paths with bandwidth requirements exceeding 110 GHz, correlating simulations with laboratory measurements.
  • Design and simulate power circuits and power distribution networks for high-performance coherent DSPs.
  • Collaborate with systems, analog, digital, firmware, design-for-test, failure analysis, validation, and applications engineers to define platform requirements and resolve design tradeoffs.
  • Partner with hardware and firmware engineers to bring up boards, establish initial functionality, isolate issues, and drive corrective actions.
  • Develop and execute board validation plans, analyze results, and prepare detailed reports documenting performance, issues, and recommendations.
  • Perform board-level failure analysis, identify root causes, and define repairs or design improvements.
  • Work with PCB layout engineers, fabrication suppliers, and assembly partners to define component placement, stack-ups, routing constraints, and design rules.
  • Provide technical guidance, participate in design reviews, and improve engineering execution.
  • Document technical work and collaborate with engineering teams and external suppliers.

Benefits

  • Bonus and equity plans, including a new-hire equity grant and annual equity refreshers.
  • Employee stock purchase plan with a 2-year look back.
  • Family support programs.
  • Mental health resources.
  • Recognition and service awards.
