About The Position

Schnabel Engineering is seeking a Senior Staff Geologist in our Greensboro, NC office. We are looking for a motivated candidate to join our growing team of more than six engineering geologists to support our efforts on interesting and challenging dam, tunnel, and geohazard projects across the United States. This position will consist of management of advanced geotechnical investigations with a focus on both existing and proposed dam, hydropower, and pumped-storage hydropower projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering Geology, Geological Engineering, Geology, or related Science
  • 2 or more years of professional experience
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Strong work ethic and a desire for continual self-improvement
  • Willingness and ability to perform field work and travel, including assignments that may last a few weeks away from the office
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds and be physically able to negotiate construction sites, enter trenches, climb ladders and work outside
  • Ability to pass a background check which may include criminal history, motor vehicle record and credit check
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment screening

Nice To Haves

  • Prior professional work in a related field
  • Master’s Degree in related field preferred
  • OpenGround, CADD, and/or GIS experience preferred
  • GIT or PG Licensure preferred

Responsibilities

  • Support detailed and technically advanced geotechnical investigations for dams, tunnels, and other critical infrastructure project
  • Support installation and measurement of geotechnical instrumentation
  • Support the creation of Drilling Program Plans (DPPs)
  • Oversee geotechnical investigations in the field
  • Log test borings
  • Perform geologic field mapping
  • QA/QC boring logs and material classifications
  • Prepare boring logs and drawings using OpenGround and other software packages
  • Support 3D geologic modeling efforts
  • Collect and prepare samples for laboratory testing
  • Oversee geologically related construction activities
  • Perform calculations to support designs
  • Provide support on preparation of reports and proposals
  • Support potential failure mode analyses, risk analyses, and design and construction projects
