Senior Staff Data Center Systems Engineer, R&D

Crusoe•Denver, CO
•$188,000 - $235,000

About The Position

Crusoe is seeking a senior technical leader for its R&D organization to define future data center architectures and integrate electrical, mechanical, thermal, and compute systems. The role evaluates emerging technologies and develops system-level integration concepts, guiding technologies from bench-scale evaluation and pilot deployment through production validation and hyperscale rollout. The engineer will scan the industry, assess vendors and technology providers, define reference architectures and system interfaces, and advise on technical feasibility and readiness. They will partner with engineering teams across the company to translate R&D findings into production guidance, build external technical relationships, and advise R&D and company leadership on technology choices and long-term infrastructure strategy. The posting’s role description refers to the position as “Principal Systems Integration Engineer,” while the supplied job title is “Senior Staff Data Center Systems Engineer, R&D.”

Requirements

  • 15+ years of progressive engineering experience in data center design, large-scale infrastructure, hyperscale computing environments, or industrial power systems.
  • Increasing scope across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to architect and optimize across electrical power, mechanical and thermal systems, compute infrastructure, and facility design.
  • Working knowledge of power generation and distribution, cooling technologies including direct liquid cooling, data center facility design, and compute/networking infrastructure.
  • Experience leading technology evaluations, feasibility studies, or architectural explorations that inform future product or infrastructure direction.
  • Experience authoring system-level architecture documents, interface specifications, and integration standards for complex multidisciplinary programs.
  • Proven ability to influence and align engineering teams across organizational boundaries without direct authority and drive technical consensus across disciplines.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Exceptional ability to communicate complex technical concepts to engineering peers and executive leadership.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree; preferred but not required.
  • Direct experience in a hyperscale systems architecture or principal engineering role.
  • Experience with modular or containerized data center design and deployment.
  • Familiarity with DC power distribution architectures.
  • Experience with high-performance computing (HPC) and GPU-accelerated AI infrastructure at scale.
  • Background in mission-critical facility design, including redundancy, reliability, and availability engineering.
  • Experience engaging with startups, research institutions, and emerging technology providers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development of next-generation data center reference architectures integrating electrical, mechanical, thermal, and compute domains.
  • Scan the industry for emerging technologies, vendor capabilities, and evolving standards; lead full-system evaluations of candidate technologies.
  • Define and maintain systems-level architecture governing interfaces and co-optimization across Crusoe’s infrastructure layers.
  • Guide technologies from initial evaluation and bench-scale testing through pilot deployment, production validation, and hyperscale rollout; establish readiness criteria and milestones.
  • Serve as the principal technical voice within R&D, drive feasibility assessments, lead pilot-program design reviews, and provide senior technical input on go/no-go decisions.
  • Author high-level system specifications, interface control documents, and design standards, and translate R&D findings into guidance for production teams.
  • Partner with engineering teams across the company as R&D’s primary technical interface, sharing evaluation insights and aligning R&D outputs with deployment needs.
  • Build and maintain technical relationships with industry providers, startups, OEMs, academic research groups, and national laboratories; evaluate roadmaps and identify early-access or collaborative-development opportunities.
  • Advise R&D and company leadership on technology choices, industry direction, and Crusoe’s long-term strategic positioning.
