Senior Staff CAD Designer

Boston Dynamics•Waltham, MA
•$115,000 - $130,000

About The Position

Boston Dynamics is seeking a Senior Staff CAD Designer to join its Spot robot team. The designer will serve as a key technical resource for new product initiatives, designing ruggedized hardware for demanding environments as part of a collaborative team supporting the Spot robot. Boston Dynamics develops mobile robots for industrial applications and warehouse logistics. The role partners with Mechanical Engineering teams to turn concepts, prototypes, and functional requirements into robust, production-ready CAD models. It covers mechanical packaging and architecture, detailed component and assembly modeling, engineering drawing packages, electromechanical integration, design-for-manufacturing and assembly collaboration, and PLM and release management. The position uses CATIA and requires experience with volume fabrication methods and PLM systems.

Requirements

  • Associate or bachelor's degree in Mechanical Design Technology, Computer-Aided Drafting/Design, or Mechanical Engineering; alternatively, equivalent vocational training and relevant practical experience.
  • At least 7 years of dedicated mechanical CAD design experience in robotics, consumer electronics, automotive, aerospace, or industrial automation.
  • Advanced, expert-level proficiency in CATIA.
  • Deep practical knowledge of design for manufacturing and assembly for volume fabrication processes, including injection molding, high-pressure die casting, gravity casting, and precision CNC.
  • Extensive experience with PLM systems to manage BOMs, revision schemes, and ECO approvals; Arena is preferred, with Windchill, Enovia, or Teamcenter also listed.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Expert command of ASME Y14.5 GD&T drafting practices and mechanical drawing creation.
  • Experience conducting detailed tolerance stack-ups for precision-machined and molded assemblies.
  • Hands-on experience with 3D wire harness and cable routing workbenches, such as CATIA Electrical or Harness Design.
  • Advanced surfacing experience, including Class-A or complex aesthetic curves, bridging Industrial Design surfaces to production tooling geometry.
  • Detailed design experience with environmental sealing architectures, including IP67/IP68 O-ring glands, elastomeric gaskets, ultrasonic welding, structural adhesives, and overmolding.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineering teams to iterate on concepts, resolve design challenges, and translate prototypes and functional requirements into production-ready CAD models.
  • Build and maintain master skeleton models, top-down assembly architectures, and packaging layouts for high-density electromechanical subsystems.
  • Design mechanical components and assemblies in CATIA, including structural enclosures, structural castings, injection-molded plastics, and machined components.
  • Create fully defined 2D engineering drawing packages compliant with ASME Y14.5 GD&T standards, including datum definitions, inspection dimensions, and surface finishes.
  • Route wire harnesses, flexible cables, and flex PCBAs in constrained dynamic spaces in partnership with electrical and mechanical engineering teams.
  • Work with prototype shops, tooling vendors, and suppliers to optimize designs for toolability and assembly.
  • Manage multi-level Bills of Materials, configure change packages, and author Engineering Change Orders in the PLM system.
