About The Position

Apple Service Engineering (ASE) builds and provides the systems and infrastructure that power Apple services, including iCloud, Apple Music, Apple Intelligence, and Maps. The ASE Compute team is seeking a senior Site Reliability Engineering software engineer to own the technical direction of the Kubernetes internals used by Apple services. This role sets the architecture for controllers and namespace management infrastructure, strengthens the reliability of Kubernetes services, and represents Apple’s requirements in the upstream community. The engineer will work across the full lifecycle, from design through production operation at global scale, and serve as a technical authority for service teams across Apple. The role includes writing critical platform components, raising team capability through design reviews, mentoring, and tooling, and building AI-assisted tools for triage, operational workflows, and infrastructure automation.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years in a Site Reliability Engineering, DevOps, or infrastructure-focused role.
  • Deep experience operating large-scale, multi-tenant Kubernetes environments in production.
  • Strong systems background and ability to troubleshoot across networking, operating systems, container runtimes, and applications.
  • Expert-level Go experience, including a track record of shipping and owning controllers or operators relied on by other teams.
  • Experience with configuration management at scale, such as Puppet, Ansible, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive cross-functional initiatives to completion.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, an engineering-related field, or equivalent related experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with third-party cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Familiarity with bare-metal provisioning and lifecycle management at datacenter scale.
  • Understanding of cloud-native observability tools such as Prometheus, Thanos, Splunk, or similar.
  • Experience running infrastructure as an internal managed service with defined SLAs.

Responsibilities

  • Own the architecture and technical direction of controllers and namespace management infrastructure, from design through global-scale production operation.
  • Identify and resolve reliability problems that emerge beyond upstream defaults, incorporate fixes into the platform, and automate operational work that cannot be designed away.
  • Set platform reliability standards, including SLOs, error budgets, alerting philosophy, upgrade and rollout strategy, and related runbooks.
  • Participate in on-call, lead response to difficult production incidents, and complete post-incident follow-up to prevent recurrence.
  • Represent Apple in the upstream Kubernetes community through design proposals and code contributions in relevant SIGs.
  • Develop other engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and direct mentoring.
  • Lead cross-team technical initiatives through ambiguity.
  • Advise partner service teams and their leadership on platform capabilities and tradeoffs, shaping their designs and the Compute roadmap.
  • Build AI-assisted tooling to accelerate triage, operational workflows, and infrastructure automation for the team.
