About The Position

The Optical Systems Engineer supports the program team through requirements and interface management, system design, risk and opportunity management, verification and test planning, and event-based activities such as RCCAs, FRBs, and MRBs. The role also includes tracking and addressing open action items. Systems Engineers are expected to work and lead collaboratively in support of the overall team. This position is part of L3Harris’s Space Systems Sector within the Space and Mission Systems Segment. The products developed by the segment support space-based and ground-based customer missions. Systems Engineers lead technology across the system lifecycle and participate in critical phases and milestone reviews, including pursuit, SDR, PDR, CDR, TRR, PSR, and system operation. The role applies optical communications and electrical engineering principles to hardware. It evaluates customer and operational needs, helps define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrates technical parameters, and ensures compatibility across physical, functional, and program interfaces. The engineer supports integration of optical terminals into satellite architectures and collaborates with engineering teams on system design, testing, and validation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 6 years of prior relevant experience; or a graduate degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior related experience; or, in lieu of a degree, a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with the Space Development Agency (SDA) OCT Standard.
  • Experience allocating requirements for free-space optical communication links and ground terminals.
  • Experience leading complex technical teams and programs to deliver hardware.
  • Experience authoring Statements of Work (SOW) for vendors to propose.

Responsibilities

  • Apply optical communications and electrical engineering principles to hardware.
  • Evaluate customer and operational needs to help define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters, and ensure compatibility of physical, functional, and program interfaces.

  • Use requirements management software such as DOORS and Jama.
  • Support testing and troubleshooting of systems, modules, and RF-module subassemblies, working with program engineering personnel as required.
  • Interface with Engineering, Operations, Quality, and other supporting functions to drive defect resolution to root cause.
  • Generate and implement improvements in product and test design and methodologies to reduce cost, increase yield, and improve throughput.
  • Generate and review technical content for test procedures, drawings, engineering specifications, reports, Engineering Change Orders, and other documentation.
  • Execute design trades to support technical decisions.
  • Participate in and potentially lead business pursuit efforts.
  • Support requirements management, interface management, system design, risk and opportunity management, verification planning, and test planning.
  • Lead or support event-based activities such as RCCAs, FRBs, and MRBs, and address open action items.
