About The Position

Join the Apartment Construction Loan Program (ACLP) team, in the Senior, Specialist, Multi-Unit Underwriting position. In this role, you will help advance new housing development across Canada by supporting the delivery of the Apartment Construction Loan Program. You will leverage your financial expertise, underwriting experience and relationship-building skills to drive the development of rental housing across the country. You will lead risk management analysis, decisions and recommendations for approval for the most complex scenarios related to underwriting, file-specific risk mitigation, optimizing client service and achieving corporate objectives.

Requirements

  • An undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, business administration or commerce or a related field.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in Multi-unit underwriting, as well as credit risk analysis, real estate financing, loan adjudication, mortgage loan insurance and financial markets.
  • Demonstrated experience working with financial viability and loan approvals with specialized knowledge of housing financing.
  • Expert knowledge of underwriting theories, principles and processes.
  • The ability to present ideas in a clear and convincing manner to facilitate having proposals or plans accepted.
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective relationship and to motivate others, influence and develop their potential.
  • Solid oral and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey decisions and address objections.
  • The ability to take initiative and work independently to develop and utilize a network within CMHC.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience or knowledge in property management, real estate appraisal, property inspection, or real estate law is considered an asset.
  • Successful completion of a professional association designation such as CRF, AACI, CA, CMA, CFA, or CPM.
  • Experience in building reports and/or in using statistical software such as MS Excel.

Responsibilities

  • Apply sound judgement and decision-making practices based on complex conducted financial analysis while making recommendations.
  • Act as a direct lender under the ACLP program: review, prioritize and underwrite loan applications while assessing financial viability while adhering to the program's policies and operational procedures.
  • Lead underwriting for large-scale projects, exercising delegated financial authority.
  • Demonstrate leadership by coaching team members and providing guidance on complex, high-value, or high-risk financial requests, including the use of technical financial tools.
  • Maintain quality relationships with clients and collaborate with Client Solutions teams to manage and maintain complex and sophisticated external client relationships, to understand their needs, objectives, and explore opportunities.
  • Work in partnership with clients, stakeholders, and various levels of government by offering advice, support and alternative solutions.
  • Manage politically sensitive issues by demonstrating critical thinking, judgment and know-how to find solutions.
  • Implement process improvements for increased efficiencies and enhanced customer experience.
