About The Position

The University of Iowa Health Care Department of Radiology is seeking a Senior Sonographer to perform advanced ultrasound procedures across multiple specialty areas. Working under limited supervision, this role utilizes state-of-the-art imaging technology, educates patients about examination procedures, monitors patient well-being during exams, and serves as a resource for students and staff by providing instruction on ultrasound techniques and equipment operation. Requirements

Requires completion of one of the following pathways: Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited or equivalent program in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, Diagnostic Cardiac Sonography or Vascular Technology, or Completion of a two-year or more accredited health science program (i.e. Radiologic Technology, Medical Technology, Nursing, etc.) plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography, or Completion of a bachelor’s degree plus completion of a twelve-month formal education program in Sonography.
Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or other nationally recognized accreditation organizations for primary specialty.
Extensive (3-5 years) progressively responsible experience in diagnostic medical sonography or vascular sonography.
Experience providing clinical education to students, sonographers, and residents.
Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
Requires registration by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers within nine (9) months following the start of employment.
Requires registration in Abdomen.

Nice To Haves

A Bachelor's degree in Radiation Sciences or other Allied Health Sciences discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience; a bachelor’s degree in Radiation Sciences is highly desirable.
Registration in Vascular and OB/GYN specialty areas.

Responsibilities

Performs complex diagnostic ultrasonography procedures including imaging and Doppler.
Provides instruction to trainees, students and other medical staff on operation and safety precautions.
Consults with the interpreting physician regarding the ultrasound exam findings.
Documents exam information as required by departmental standards.
Evaluates images of ultrasound exams and determine if the exam is of diagnostic quality.
Assists with and provide ultrasound guidance for intraoperative and invasive procedures.
Provides information and instructions to patient, patient’s family or others, regarding the nature of requested diagnostic and/or therapeutic procedures.
Performs patient care techniques including skin preparation, vital sign monitoring and recording, and basic life support; prepare and administer contrast material to patients.
Maintains effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.
Instructs and evaluate sonography students on the operation of diagnostic equipment.
Instructs medical residents on operation of diagnostic equipment.
Maintains quality control with the ultrasound section in accordance with accepted departmental standards.
Determines equipment malfunctions and contact repair service.
Performs equipment calibration and sterilization as prescribed by standard accepted methods of operation.
