About The Position

The Senior Solution Design Controls Engineer develops modernization and lifecycle solutions for Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (ASRS) within Solution Development in Dematic’s Lifecycle Solutions and Services (LSS) group. The role creates controls concepts, solution requirements, and estimates for technologies including Storage and Retrieval Machines (SRMs), Dematic Multishuttle, AutoStore, unit-load conveyor systems, and warehouse control systems. The engineer evaluates installed systems, customer requirements, technical documentation, and field conditions to identify risks and modernization opportunities. They define controls hardware, software, interfaces, engineering, commissioning, and implementation requirements; coordinate with internal disciplines and external partners; and own solution definition, equipment requirements, bills of materials, cost estimates, schedules, assumptions, and exclusions. The role also supports execution handoffs, shares technical knowledge with colleagues, and manages multiple opportunities and priorities. Travel to customer and Dematic locations within the United States may be required up to 20%. The estimated base pay range is $120,000–$145,000 at the time of posting. Final compensation depends on factors including work location, education, experience, knowledge, and skills. Dematic describes its employment policy as providing equal opportunity and prohibiting discrimination and harassment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, engineering technology, or a related technical field, or equivalent education and relevant experience in controls and material-handling systems.
  • At least 9 years of applicable experience in controls engineering, material handling, estimating, commissioning, or related disciplines, including design, modernization, or commissioning of automated material-handling or industrial automation systems.
  • Working knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, drives, safety controls, industrial communications, network architecture, and system interfaces.
  • Experience using Rockwell, Siemens, or a comparable industrial controls platform.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics and PLC programs and resolve complex or less clearly defined controls issues by translating technical information into clear solution requirements.
  • Strong customer discovery, verbal and written communication, and presentation skills, including the ability to define customer requirements, influence solution decisions, and explain technical alternatives, tradeoffs, and value.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and related business tools for technical documentation, cost estimates, and customer proposals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to staying current with evolving controls technologies, ASRS applications, and material-handling industry practices.

Nice To Haves

  • Controls estimating experience, including estimating labor, hardware, software, commissioning, travel, implementation resources, and project schedules.
  • Knowledge of vendor capabilities, contractor performance, labor markets, and pricing trends.
  • Direct ASRS controls experience, including SRMs, onboard and offboard control systems, brownfield modernization, controls migration, obsolescence planning, lifecycle upgrades, and phased implementation in operating facilities.
  • Experience integrating warehouse control systems (WCS), warehouse execution systems (WES), host systems, manufacturing execution systems (MES), or enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate installed ASRS systems, customer requirements, technical documentation, and field conditions to identify risks, modernization needs, and opportunities to improve safety, productivity, cost efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
  • Develop controls modernization concepts and define hardware, software, interfaces, engineering, commissioning, and implementation requirements.
  • Coordinate with mechanical, software, execution, and external partners to deliver controls solutions for standalone or integrated projects.
  • Own controls solution definition, equipment requirements, bill of materials, cost estimate, schedule, assumptions, and exclusions.
  • Provide execution teams with a clear post-award handoff of the solution, key assumptions, and technical requirements.
  • Share technical knowledge and guide colleagues on ASRS controls applications, estimating practices, and solution development.
  • Manage multiple opportunities and competing priorities while maintaining accurate schedules, risk assessments, and forecasts.
  • Travel up to 20% to customer and Dematic locations within the United States.
