About The Position

The Senior Software Platform Engineer will build and operate the internal developer platform used by engineering teams in the Wallet, Payments and Commerce organization. The platform supports the full software development lifecycle, including service scaffolding, building and releasing software, provisioning cloud infrastructure and data stores, deploying across multiple regions, and providing observability and operational tooling. The team works under strict privacy, security and compliance requirements and maintains a high bar for engineering quality. Its purpose is to help teams build and ship products faster and more reliably. This is a software engineering role focused on the platform itself, with design and production code as the primary outputs. The engineer will design APIs, implement the systems behind them, and own their performance and correctness. The role includes building Kubernetes-native services, controllers and APIs in Go; simplifying infrastructure provisioning through declarative APIs; diagnosing performance and correctness issues at scale; and improving testing, code review and observability. The engineer will participate in an on-call rotation for owned systems and use incidents to deliver permanent fixes or guardrails. Coding agents and LLM-based tools are expected to be a normal part of development, while the engineer remains accountable for the correctness of shipped work.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of experience building and operating production backend or infrastructure systems.
  • Strong programming ability in Go, with solid fundamentals in API design, concurrency and error handling.
  • A practical testing discipline, including tests that can catch regressions rather than merely restating implementation.
  • Distributed systems experience covering idempotency, eventual consistency, retries and partial failure.
  • Practical performance engineering experience, including profiling and measuring the impact of a fix.
  • Working knowledge of Kubernetes.
  • Extensive cloud experience with at least one major cloud provider.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including the ability to write actionable design documents and incident write-ups.
  • Fluency with coding agents and LLM-based development tools, and judgment about when to trust their output.
  • Ability to coach and mentor other individual contributors and lead a design review to a decision.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience writing Kubernetes controllers or operators in production, including custom resource design and schema versioning.
  • Experience with declarative configuration and templating systems such as Pkl, CUE, Jsonnet, Kustomize or Helm, or infrastructure as code such as Terraform.
  • Extended experience in at least one of the following: GitOps and progressive delivery, developer platforms and internal tooling, multi-region and disaster recovery, observability, or regulated environments such as PCI.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build Kubernetes-native services, controllers and APIs in Go, owning subsystems from design review through production operation.
  • Design APIs and write production code for systems used by engineering teams across the organization.
  • Turn complex infrastructure provisioning into simple declarative APIs for application teams.
  • Improve platform performance and predictability at scale, and diagnose performance and correctness issues such as hot loops, unbounded work queues, memory growth and cross-region convergence failures.
  • Maintain meaningful test coverage and conduct code reviews that improve designs.
  • Build the observability needed to operate the systems developed.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation for owned systems and turn incidents into permanent fixes or guardrails.
  • Use coding agents and LLM-based tooling as part of development while taking responsibility for the correctness of shipped work.
  • Coach and mentor other individual contributors and lead design reviews to a decision.
