Backend Senior Software Engineer (Control Plane & Orchestration)

SimSpace CorporationSan Jose, CA
CRC 1,500,000 - CRC 2,500,000

About The Position

SimSpace is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to build the orchestration engine at the heart of its internet simulation platform. This role is crucial as every action within the platform, from standing up a simulated service to provisioning a SaaS application, flows through the control plane that this engineer will own. Unlike other engineering roles that build simulation layers, this position focuses on building the system that integrates them, including the API surface for external systems, the event-driven backbone for coordinating actions, and the deployment and operational model for a complex, multi-tenant platform. The ideal candidate is energized by building systems that other engineers depend on and possesses strong instincts for distributed systems correctness and operational rigor.

Requirements

  • Strong bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish skills required across written, virtual, and in-person interactions.
  • Experience building event-driven or message-driven systems, with an understanding of the tradeoffs involved in different coordination approaches.
  • Strong Kubernetes expertise including writing operators or controllers, managing custom resources, and reasoning about multi-tenant workload isolation.
  • Experience designing and operating storage systems across different storage paradigms (file, object, block, or container storage) and choosing the right abstraction for each use case.
  • Strong API design instincts, with experience building platform APIs that other engineers depend on and understanding what makes an API surface reliable, consistent, and operationally sound over time.
  • Solid distributed systems fundamentals, with the ability to reason clearly about consistency, failure modes, and convergence in systems where a central control plane coordinates distributed components that may lose connectivity or fail mid-operation.
  • Operational rigor: ability to instrument what is built, write runbooks, and consider failure modes before they become incidents.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with air-gapped or on-premises Kubernetes deployments.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code and GitOps-based deployment workflows.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build the control plane API, ensuring idempotency, consistent error semantics, and operational patterns that make the API pleasant to build on.
  • Own the event-driven orchestration layer that coordinates multi-step operations across platform subsystems, ensuring correct and complete propagation of actions like standing up a new range or updating topology.
  • Build and maintain the platform's persistent storage layer, providing reliable storage primitives for dependent services and subsystems across file, object, and container storage.
  • Own the deployment model for the internet simulation platform, including Kubernetes operators/controllers for lifecycle management, upgrade strategies for services that cannot afford downtime, and the configuration model for integrating new ranges.
  • Define and own the state model for the platform, determining authoritative sources, component recovery from partial failures, and platform convergence to a correct state after disruption.
  • Collaborate with the network simulation tech lead on the in-range proxy agent architecture, owning the infrastructure side of the interface, including agent deployment, connectivity management, and handoff models.
  • Partner with the SRE team on the operational model for new platform services, establishing runbooks, incident response procedures, and observability instrumentation.
  • Contribute to cross-cutting concerns such as configuration management, secrets handling, and the security posture of the control plane.

Benefits
