Senior Software Engineer - AI Operator

HiveWatch•Los Angeles, CA
•$160,000 - $200,000

About The Position

HiveWatch is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its App Experience team and build AI-powered features for the intelligence layer of its physical security platform. The role focuses on developing agents that triage alarms, assess incidents, and recommend or take actions similar to those of experienced security operators. This involves composing language, vision, and audio models with company data, tools, and retrieval into production-grade workflows, spanning model orchestration in Kotlin, Spring Boot, and Python services and React/TypeScript operator interfaces. The engineer will own the evaluation loop for agent features: defining correct decisions, creating evaluation datasets and harnesses, and using results to improve prompts, tools, and architecture. The work includes analyzing customer data such as alarm streams, video, access-control events, and operator actions; building guardrails, human-in-the-loop controls, and observability; and making agent decisions understandable to customers. The role also involves rapidly prototyping and then hardening successful ideas into reliable, cost-aware features in partnership with product teams and security operations experts. The position includes mentoring junior engineers, influencing technical decisions, delivering and supporting AWS services, and participating in an approximately one-week-per-month 24/7 on-call rotation as needed.

Requirements

  • 7 or more years of software engineering experience, including at least 3 years in senior roles.
  • Strong experience with at least one compiled, object-oriented language such as Rust, Kotlin, Java, C#, or C++.
  • Strong proficiency with relational databases, SQL, data modeling, and query tuning.
  • Experience building full-stack applications in microservice architectures.
  • Ability to work hypothesis-first with data by framing questions, writing SQL or analysis code, and drawing sound conclusions.
  • Experience with modern cloud services and cloud-native development.
  • Experience with Docker containerization and deploying applications to Kubernetes.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and modern development workflows.
  • Experience using monitoring tools to measure and alert on performance and reliability issues.
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for AI-native software development practices.
  • Strong system design skills and experience with distributed, high-scale applications.
  • Ability to learn new technologies quickly and work in agile environments.
  • Data-driven approach and willingness to use metrics to influence decisions.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong experience with AWS.
  • Experience designing evaluation harnesses for non-deterministic systems, including golden datasets, LLM-as-judge, and regression testing for agent behavior.
  • Experience with real-time or event-driven data such as Kinesis, Kafka, or similar technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with Terraform for Infrastructure as Code.
  • Background in security technology or enterprise software.
  • Experience with observability tools and performance optimization.
  • Startup experience and/or early-stage SaaS experience.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build agentic product features that assess security scenarios and make decisions such as whether to triage, escalate, dismiss, or dispatch.
  • Form hypotheses about company data, query production datasets, analyze results, and use findings to guide product and model decisions.
  • Orchestrate self-hosted and frontier model calls, including prompt design, tool use, structured outputs, model routing, and cost/latency tradeoffs.
  • Ship end-to-end features using Python for LLM/inference orchestration and analysis, and Kotlin, Spring Boot, and GraphQL backend services.
  • Work with product teams, customers, and security operations experts to encode operator judgment into agent behavior.
  • Deliver features and services on AWS using Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD pipelines, and modern service delivery practices.
  • Mentor junior engineers and influence team architecture and development practices.
  • Support production systems through incident response, troubleshooting, and break-fix activities to maintain reliability and customer trust.
  • Participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation approximately one week per month as needed.

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage.
  • Eligible to participate in the HiveWatch Equity Incentive Plan.
  • Competitive compensation packages.
  • Modern, newly renovated headquarters in El Segundo, California.
  • 401(k) with a 4% company match.
  • Flexible paid time off.
  • Family-friendly, compassionate culture that values balance and belonging.
