Senior Software Engineer, Workload Resilience

MongoDB•New York, NY
•$101,000 - $273,000•Hybrid

About The Position

The Workload Resilience team improves MongoDB availability through data-plane solutions, building core server workload management infrastructure that queues work, sheds load, and stabilizes performance as system resources become constrained. The team developed Intelligent Workload Management, which uses dynamic rate limiting and operation prioritization when a database is overloaded. The role suits an agile engineer focused on shipping incremental improvements, customer impact, and operational excellence. Candidates should be based near a MongoDB office for the hybrid working model. The engineer will write and test production database code, investigate and improve server availability and performance, and develop workload policies and diagnostics. The role also includes operational readiness work, cross-company collaboration, interviewing, mentoring, and leading projects from design and planning through execution. Success is measured by learning MongoDB architecture and fixing bugs in the first month; contributing to a project for a major release, reviewing code, and participating in feature design by three months; and leading a new feature while helping mentor engineers by six months.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience programming, debugging, and performance tuning distributed and/or highly concurrent low-level software systems.
  • Strong operational excellence fundamentals, including refining tools, team processes, and culture to deliver high-quality, reliable software consistently.
  • Strong systems fundamentals, including multithreaded programming and performance profiling.
  • Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills.
  • Desire to collaborate with colleagues and mentor junior engineers and interns.
  • Experience with distributed-system concepts such as fault tolerance, consistency, and availability.
  • Experience writing software to observe and mitigate overload scenarios in highly performant and concurrent systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with C++ and/or Rust is preferable.

Responsibilities

  • Write production-ready database code in C++, Rust, or possibly another low-level language.
  • Write unit and integration tests in C++, Rust, JavaScript, and Python to demonstrate application correctness.
  • Investigate server availability and performance characteristics and write regression tests.
  • Implement and continuously improve server workload policies to rate limit and prioritize incoming and in-progress operations, maximizing database availability and performance under overload.
  • Improve workload and system observability and diagnostics for the core server.
  • Diagnose availability, performance, and correctness test failures; identify bugs or deficiencies in existing code and fix them.
  • Interview candidates for software engineering positions.
  • Continuously improve operational readiness, including monitoring and observability, incident management, and rollout processes.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and engineering teams across the company on large initiatives.
  • Mentor new and junior engineers and help facilitate technical growth on the team.
  • Lead projects by writing scope and technical design documents and appropriately estimating and planning execution across contributors.
