About The Position

Wonder is seeking a product-minded Senior Software Engineer to join its Robotics backend team. The team builds automation solutions for Wonder’s restaurants, helping make its food service promise possible at scale. The engineer will build backend systems that power automated restaurants and support robotic systems, expanding existing systems for new robotic solutions while maintaining the reliability and performance of live production restaurants. The role primarily uses Elixir and the Phoenix framework to build real-time distributed systems that connect cloud infrastructure, on-site robotic hardware, frontend applications, and other Wonder software. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and deploy high-impact features, contribute to technical discussions, and mentor other engineers. The position is based in Wonder’s Charlestown, Boston office and requires working in the office at least three days per week, with additional days as project demands require.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience building highly concurrent, distributed systems and shipping them to production.
  • Strong system design skills, a product-focused mindset, and a track record of owning features end to end.
  • Proficiency in Elixir and the Phoenix framework, or significant experience with other functional languages and a desire to master Elixir.
  • Proficiency with PostgreSQL and relational database design.
  • Experience designing, building, and consuming WebSocket events, REST APIs, webhooks, and other message-based systems.
  • Experience designing and deploying infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code; Wonder uses Terraform.
  • Pragmatic problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex technical obstacles.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to facilitate technical discussions with product, design, and operations partners.
  • Ability to work in the office at least three days per week, with additional days as project demands require.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement systems that manage complex state across distributed systems and prevent data loss in mission-critical workflows, especially order fulfillment, robotic communication, and human-machine interaction.
  • Design infrastructure spanning cloud and on-premise resources, including event-driven architectures, PostgreSQL databases, WebSocket protocols, and containerized applications.
  • Promote software reliability through iterative review and testing, manage releases, and monitor system performance.
  • Plan feature development by considering product requirements, evaluating tradeoffs, collaborating with peers, and defining project tasks.
  • Improve team processes by applying industry best practices, automating repetitive tasks, and learning from experience.
  • Write clear specifications, improve documentation, and give, seek, and incorporate feedback.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional product, design, and operations partners, facilitate technical discussions, and mentor engineers.

Benefits
