Senior Software Engineer - Kubernetes

Microsoft•Redmond, WA
•$119,800 - $261,000

About The Position

Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team builds data products and platforms, including Microsoft Fabric and Azure Monitor. Within Azure Monitor, this role helps build and evolve the cloud-native infrastructure layer that supports Azure Monitor and other observability services. The engineer owns complex Kubernetes-based platform systems end to end, drives architecture across teams, improves reliability and security at scale, and helps shape the safe application of AI-assisted and AI-agentic capabilities to infrastructure operations. The team builds planetary-scale Kubernetes-based cloud infrastructure platforms for Azure Monitor workloads, along with scalable and resilient cloud-hosted microservices and operational tooling. Its infrastructure supports availability indicators, monitoring, alerting, diagnostics, and auto-mitigation, while advancing secure, compliant, cost-efficient patterns that improve reliability across Azure Monitor services. The position operates in a fast-paced, collaborative environment focused on shipping early, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field and 4+ years of technical engineering experience coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer, and/or government security screening requirements, including passing the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire or transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • Passion for distributed systems and planetary-scale services.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Kubernetes, containers, cloud-native infrastructure, distributed systems, or large-scale production services.
  • Experience improving reliability, security, observability, networking, or operational excellence for live services.
  • Experience partnering across teams to deliver infrastructure capabilities with clear ownership and supportability.
  • Experience mentoring engineers, leading design reviews, and driving cross-team architectural alignment.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and code reviews across feature areas and participate throughout the engineering lifecycle, from research and discovery through prototyping, development, deployment, and live-site support.
  • Work with multiple partner teams and deploy services across all Azure regions.
  • Design Kubernetes-based cloud infrastructure platform components, focusing on reliability, security, networking, diagnosability, and global-scale cost efficiency.
  • Identify bottlenecks and engineer end-to-end solutions for complex production systems, from problem definition and design tradeoffs through execution, launch, monitoring, and operational maturity.
  • Lead cross-organization alignment with infrastructure, observability, platform, and service teams to define ownership, unblock execution, and shape long-term investments.
  • Raise engineering standards through design and operational reviews, architecture guidance, incident follow-through, and repeatable engineering practices.
  • Shape the safe and reliable use of AI-agentic systems and AI-assisted operations for Kubernetes-based infrastructure at scale.
  • Embody Microsoft’s culture and values.
