Senior Software Engineer
About The Position
CAKE Mortgage is a cutting-edge wholesale mortgage lender specializing in Non-QM products. We're redefining the lending experience with innovative programs, streamlined processes, and a commitment to speed and precision. As we grow, we're looking for forward-thinking professionals who thrive in fast-paced, collaborative environments. The Senior Software Engineer will help design and build CAKE's custom TPO platform — the web application our broker partners use to originate loans with us — along with other products across our lending stack. This is a senior individual contributor role with real ownership from design through production support, working as part of a small, high-leverage engineering team. We're looking for an AI-native developer: a strong engineer who uses AI tools to multiply their output. Our stack is TypeScript, React, NestJS, and Postgres, running in containers on Azure. Mortgage industry experience is required.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- 6+ years building and supporting production software.
- Mortgage industry experience required; Encompass and wholesale/TPO experience strongly preferred.
- Strong TypeScript skills, with experience in React and NestJS or a comparable Node.js framework.
- Experience designing and supporting REST APIs, relational databases (we use Postgres), and third-party integrations.
- Experience with containers, CI/CD, and cloud platforms; we run on Azure.
- Fluent with AI development tools; experience shipping LLM-powered features is a plus.
- Ability to take an ambiguous problem from idea to shipped, supported software with minimal oversight.
- Strong judgment on tradeoffs between speed, quality, and scope, with the ability to explain them clearly.
- Excellent communication skills with both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.
Nice To Haves
- Encompass and wholesale/TPO experience strongly preferred.
- Experience shipping LLM-powered features is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Design and build the custom TPO platform, including the broker-facing web application, its backend services, and its integrations.
- Integrate with the systems that run the business, including Encompass (our LOS), pricing engines, and document and vendor services.
- Own your work through production — containers, CI/CD, deployment, monitoring, and incident response.
- Write clean, tested TypeScript in React and NestJS. Review code, set standards, and keep quality high as the team grows.
- Use AI development tools daily to move fast, and build AI features into our products where they add real value.
- Work directly with operations, sales, and leadership to turn business needs into working software.
- Protect borrower and company data through secure development practices appropriate to a regulated industry.
- Mentor other engineers and help set technical direction as the team grows.
- Take on other technical projects as assigned.
