Senior Software Engineer

Onshore•New York, NY
•Onsite

About The Position

Onshore is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join one of their three engineering teams: Platform & Agents, Agriculture, or Corporate Tax & Compliance. This role involves owning a major product surface, writing critical code, and setting the technical bar. Onshore operates on a technical leadership model where all engineers ship code. Senior engineers may optionally lead a small pod of engineers, focusing on code review, 1:1s, and growth accountability, while maintaining their primary individual contributor output. This is not a path to pure people management. The role requires high ownership, a focus on correctness, and direct collaboration with founders on roadmap.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience designing, shipping, and operating production software, including systems owned end-to-end.
  • Strong proficiency in a typed language (TypeScript preferred, but deep experience in others with a willingness to switch is acceptable).
  • A track record of leading technical work, including shipping architecture and building lasting systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to improve the skills of engineers through collaboration.
  • High ownership: comfortable with ambiguity, able to define problems and plans independently.
  • A strong focus on correctness, understanding that the output is reviewed by tax professionals and filed with the IRS.
  • Clear, precise communication skills, both written and verbal, on technical topics.
  • Ability to work in person at the Onshore New York City office.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience building or operating LLM-powered systems in production (agents, evaluation harnesses, structured extraction, prompt/skill infrastructure).
  • Experience building platforms or internal tools where other engineers are the customers.
  • Judgment about when to build a primitive versus ship a one-off solution.
  • Depth in AWS or comparable cloud infrastructure, particularly workflow orchestration, queueing, and relational data at scale.
  • Experience with compliance-aware system design (audit trails, data lineage, tenant isolation, or work in regulated domains).
  • A track record of mentoring engineers through code review and technical direction.
  • Experience aligning people without direct authority.

Responsibilities

  • Own a major product surface on one of Onshore's three teams and write the code for critical components.
  • Set the technical bar through personal contributions and code reviews.
  • Optionally lead a pod of one to three engineers, providing daily code review, weekly 1:1s, and growth accountability, ensuring individual contributor output remains primary.
  • Make significant build-versus-buy and architecture decisions.
  • Own and raise the evaluation bar for their specific product surface.
  • Work directly with founders on roadmap development.

Benefits

  • Health coverage
  • Dental coverage
  • Vision coverage
  • Unlimited PTO
  • Annual base salary of $225,000
  • Total equity grant valued at $100,000 (ISOs valued at Series B preferred price, standard four-year vest with one-year cliff, early exercise available)
