About The Position

The Senior Software Engineer will own the shared NixOS-based software platform used across Sentry Tower products, including the base system images, system modules and services, hardware compute definitions, and network topology. The role has direct product impact: the platform connects cameras, radar, GPS, and sensor-board traffic over VLANs and bridges, using mesh radio, cellular, and satellite backhaul on remote hardware. The engineer will steward declarative, reproducible builds across several compute generations and a dozen product variants, helping consolidate legacy per-product configurations into a common, composable overlay. They will define and maintain network integration contracts for payloads and support migration of services from a legacy pub-sub bus to its next-generation replacement. The work includes troubleshooting issues across the Linux kernel, device trees, systemd, Nix evaluation, networking, and sensor services. The Sentry Tower Software team develops robotic systems that monitor secure land and sea perimeters for approaching people, vehicles, and vessels, integrating sensor data into a common operating picture.

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of professional software engineering experience, including substantial experience in Linux systems, embedded platforms, or infrastructure work.
  • Deep practical networking knowledge, including VLANs, bridging, routing and policy routing, DHCP, multicast, NAT, and firewalling.
  • Fluency with ip, tcpdump, and Wireshark for diagnosing real network traffic.
  • Strong experience with declarative configuration management and reproducible builds; Nix or NixOS is preferred, with adjacent experience in Bazel, Buildroot, Yocto, Terraform, Ansible, or Pulumi considered a substitute.
  • Proficiency in Rust or C++ sufficient to read and modify services running on the platform.
  • Comfort operating and troubleshooting real hardware, including serial consoles, provisioning and reflashing, boot problems, and remote debugging of inaccessible systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to define technical interfaces for other teams and maintain them through code review and documentation.
  • US person status and eligibility to obtain and maintain a US security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Hands-on NixOS experience, including writing modules and maintaining flakes.
  • Python experience for tooling and automation.
  • Experience with NVIDIA Jetson platforms (Xavier, Orin, or Thor), including BSP integration, device trees, and JetPack upgrades.
  • Fleet-scale operational experience, such as over-the-air update systems, observability pipelines, or long-lived embedded deployments.
  • Familiarity with CAN, SNMP, or managed-switch configuration in an embedded context.
  • Experience setting up and maintaining CI/CD for large build graphs and hardware-in-the-loop pipelines.

Responsibilities

  • Own the shared NixOS overlay, including system modules, compute platform definitions, common tower services, and image definitions used by product variants.
  • Own the tower network topology, including VLAN and subnet allocation, bridging, link ranking and failover across heterogeneous backhaul, NAT and firewall policy, and physical-port-to-payload mapping for each carrier board.
  • Define and enforce the network integration contract for business-line teams adding network-attached payloads.
  • Consolidate legacy per-product configurations into the common overlay and implement build-time checks to prevent configuration drift.
  • Support and extend the real-time messaging layer as services migrate from the legacy pub-sub bus to its next-generation replacement, including topic and schema contracts.
  • Debug issues across kernel and device tree, systemd unit ordering, Nix evaluation, link-layer configuration, and sensor daemons.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers and are considered part of total compensation.
  • Top-tier benefits for full-time employees, described as comprehensive and competitive and available at little to no cost to employees. Specific benefits are not listed.
