Senior Software Engineer, Simulation Platform

Anduril•Seattle, WA
•$191,000 - $253,000

About The Position

The Senior Software Engineer will contribute to Anduril’s Simulation Platform team, which owns the architecture and infrastructure of a high-fidelity, multi-domain military mission simulator. The simulator models aircraft, ships, submarines, satellites, ground vehicles, and other entities operating in realistic environments. It supports training, mission planning, autonomy development, and hardware-in-the-loop testing; connects to live systems; integrates with Anduril’s Lattice platform; and runs in a GUI for interactive scenario authoring. Mission Sim is a mature C++20 codebase with an Entity-Component-System architecture, a stable C ABI plugin system, embedded scripting, and physics-based models. The role focuses on keeping the system fast, correct, extensible, and effective for developers as the team and model library grow. Work includes developing model-authoring tools and their user interfaces, shaping extension APIs with the GUI team, building and maintaining core simulator architecture and SDK capabilities, optimizing performance and scalability, and supporting capability-model integration.

Requirements

  • At least 3 years of professional experience with C++20 and strong C++ skills, including comfort with templates, move semantics, smart pointers, and framework-level design decisions.
  • Experience designing internal APIs and frameworks for other engineers, with a focus on backwards compatibility and ergonomics.
  • Solid understanding of systems-programming fundamentals, including memory management, shared libraries, ABI stability, linking, and operating-system interfaces.
  • Comfort with linear algebra and applied mathematics.
  • Familiarity with Linux-based C++ development toolchains.
  • Ability to reason about performance-sensitive code, including cache behavior, memory layout, and algorithmic complexity.
  • Clear technical communication skills and the ability to work in a large shared codebase and negotiate architectural decisions that affect a growing team.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Government Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • At least 5 years of professional experience with C++20.
  • Experience leading or mentoring engineers on a project, setting technical direction, and bringing others along.
  • Comfort operating amid ambiguity, scoping problems and approaches, defining interfaces, and driving decisions.
  • Experience with military simulation, defense modeling and simulation, or related domains.
  • Experience with Entity-Component-System architectures or game-engine design patterns.
  • Experience designing and implementing GUI-supported workflows.
  • Familiarity with gRPC and the DIS (IEEE 1278.1) distributed simulation standard.
  • Experience with Python/C++ interoperability, such as pybind11 or embedded interpreters.
  • Familiarity with behavior trees or autonomous-agent architectures.
  • Experience developing in Nix.
  • Experience with numerical simulation, physics modeling, or scientific computing.

Responsibilities

  • Help establish model-authoring tools that extend the simulation frontend with a UI for authoring and tuning Mission Sim models.
  • Negotiate extension APIs with the GUI team and build an ergonomic UI in collaboration with Simulation Modeling engineers.
  • Contribute to the custom Entity-Component-System architecture, including entity lifecycle, component storage, and the update loop.
  • Develop and maintain plugins and SDK capabilities, including a versioned C ABI that enables external teams to extend the simulator.
  • Keep simulation execution fast enough for real-time and faster-than-real-time operation with hundreds of concurrent entities; reason about memory layout, cache behavior, and contention as entity counts grow.
  • Work on integration architecture, including gRPC services, DIS protocol interoperability, networking messaging, and file recording for analysis and playback.
  • Support domain experts in integrating new capability models and enhancing existing ones.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers and are considered part of total compensation.
  • Top-tier benefits for full-time employees, described as comprehensive and competitive and available at little to no cost to employees.
