About The Position

Fable is seeking a highly motivated Senior Software Engineer with deep backend expertise, strong full-stack development skills, and hands-on experience building AI-powered applications and agentic workflows. This is a senior individual contributor role for an engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems, takes ownership without waiting for direction, and consistently delivers high-quality software at speed. Reporting to the Director of Engineering, you will work closely with Product Management, Design, Development, Quality Engineering, and Site Reliability Engineering to design, build, and scale customer-facing products and platform capabilities. Success in this role requires strong technical leadership, adaptability, fast execution, and a passion for continuous learning in an AI-driven engineering environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Extensive backend software engineering experience building scalable production systems.
  • Strong full-stack development experience.
  • Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and distributed systems.
  • Strong experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred).
  • Experience with modern databases, caching technologies, and messaging systems.
  • Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and engineering best practices.
  • Experience working in Agile software development environments.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience with modern AI software development, including: Building AI-enabled applications, AI agent and agentic workflow development, Large Language Model (LLM) integrations, Prompt engineering and prompt optimization, Tool calling and AI orchestration, AI evaluation and testing, Rapid prototyping using AI technologies, AI-assisted software development.
  • Demonstrated technical skills, including: TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, Java, or C#, React or modern frontend frameworks, Node.js and backend application frameworks, REST APIs and GraphQL, AWS cloud services, Docker and Kubernetes, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Redis, GitHub Actions or CI/CD platforms, Infrastructure as Code, Observability and monitoring platforms, Event-driven architectures, Serverless computing.
  • Demonstrated leadership competencies, including: Take ownership and accountability for outcomes, Deliver with urgency while maintaining high engineering standards, Make informed technical decisions independently, Adapt quickly to changing priorities and business needs, Solve complex problems with a pragmatic, customer-focused mindset, Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders, Mentor others and contribute to a high-performing engineering culture, Continuously learn and embrace emerging technologies, particularly AI.

Responsibilities

  • Own technical solutions end-to-end, translating customer and business needs into scalable, production-ready software.
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and support software throughout its lifecycle.

  • Implement Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), semantic search, and knowledge retrieval where appropriate.
  • Evaluate emerging AI technologies and rapidly prototype new capabilities.
  • Leverage AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, and similar technologies to improve engineering productivity.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to use AI to simplify engineering workflows and improve customer experiences.
  • Partner closely with Product Managers and Designers to understand customer problems and business objectives.
  • Translate customer needs into scalable, high-quality software solutions that deliver measurable business value.
  • Participate in technical discovery, solution design, estimation, and delivery planning.
  • Build solutions that prioritize accessibility, usability, reliability, and customer outcomes.
  • Champion engineering best practices including code quality, automated testing, CI/CD, observability, and secure software development.
  • Participate in peer code reviews and architectural design reviews.
  • Improve engineering standards through documentation, automation, and continuous improvement.
  • Participate in production support, incident response, root cause analysis, and operational improvements.
  • Reduce technical debt while maintaining delivery momentum.
  • Provide technical leadership across projects and initiatives.
  • Mentor engineers through code reviews, technical guidance, and knowledge sharing.
  • Influence technical direction through collaboration and sound engineering judgment.
  • Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
