About The Position

Symbotic is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our Bot Platform team. In this role, you will develop software tools for monitoring, diagnostics, and system administration for our fleet of autonomous mobile robots used in inventory distribution management. The position requires excellent communication skills, the ability to collaborate in a highly multidisciplinary environment, strong technical problem-solving skills, and a passion for tackling real-world challenges in robotics.

Requirements

  • Bachelor, Masters, or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer/Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Aerospace, or related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of demonstrated experience in developing and delivering embedded software deployed in the real world.
  • Knowledge of Python and C++.
  • Experience with modern production-grade software development practices, QA processes, version control tools, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain and teach technical concepts to others.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain diagnostic, calibration, flashing, and command-simulation tooling for autonomous mobile robots, delivered on desktop and web platforms used by engineering, manufacturing, and field service teams.
  • Develop monitoring and diagnostic applications to run on the embedded target to enable system introspection.
  • Develop low-level hardware communication layers across PLC, CAN bus (Kvaser interface, CANopen SDO/PDO, motor-controller flashing protocols, custom in-house protocols), and serial peripheral buses.
  • Design and ship REST services and IPC protocol stacks that expose firmware-layer operations plus cloud-backed configuration generation pipelines that transform engineering source data into ready-to-ship artifacts.
  • Write production-grade Python 3.12+ and C++17+ code following established conventions.
  • Diagnose and resolve real hardware issues on the manufacturing floor and in the field by tracing fault tables out of the PLC, debugging protocol edge cases, validating calibration of subsystems, and supporting technicians working on live vehicles.
  • Serve as a technical lead by scoping and defining workstreams, guiding project team members, and working with the project management team to schedule and track progress.
  • Lead design and architecture reviews to ensure new features and code changes are scalable, maintainable, and aligned with best practices.
  • Identify and monitor KPIs to evaluate and improve the performance of our robots and overall system solution.
  • Be a proactive communicator who enjoys working closely with creative and technical peers.
  • Lead and mentor junior engineers.
