About The Position

Nuro is seeking a Senior Software Engineer specializing in Networking & Real-Time Systems to ensure the continuous operation of remote vehicle operation over cellular networks. This role involves tackling deep-stack networking challenges, including aggregating multiple LTE carriers and developing custom Forward Error Correction (FEC) algorithms to enhance performance beyond standard protocols. The engineer will architect a network bonding framework for zero-drop connectivity, build simulations to test the network stack against various edge cases, and optimize congestion control algorithms for high-bitrate, low-latency video streaming. Additionally, the role requires cross-functional collaboration with Hardware and Embedded teams to optimize the network stack directly on the vehicle gateway.

Requirements

• Deep understanding of the Linux networking stack, socket programming, and data flow from the physical layer to the application.
• Expertise in writing performant, thread-safe C++ code and understanding of real-time systems.
• Proficiency in understanding and implementing protocols like TCP/UDP, and knowledge of how to compensate for failures in high-mobility environments using FEC or ARQ.
• 5+ years of industry experience, or a PhD with a focus on Networking/Distributed Systems and 3+ years of industry experience.

Nice To Haves

• Video streaming framework experience, e.g., WebRTC
• Understanding of video codecs such as VP8, VP9, H264/265 etc.

Responsibilities

• Architect a network bonding framework to aggregate bandwidth across multiple cellular providers (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile) to ensure zero-drop connectivity.
• Build sophisticated ns-3-like simulations to stress test the network stack against edge cases like tunnel entries, rural dead zones, and network congestion.
• Develop and implement custom congestion control algorithms specifically tuned for high-bitrate, low-latency video streaming.
• Partner with Hardware and Embedded teams to optimize the network stack directly on our vehicle gateway.
