About The Position

SimSpace is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to lead the technical development of their internet simulation platform. This platform is crucial for creating realistic cyber range environments by simulating the internet at the network layer. The role involves designing and building a kernel-level simulation layer using a patent-pending eBPF-based architecture to replicate global internet routing behavior, including ASN topology, inter-AS latency, and traceroute/MTR output, without needing to instantiate virtual routers. As a technical lead on a new team, you will define the architectural direction, mentor engineers, and collaborate with senior leadership to create a novel, high-fidelity simulation system.

Requirements

  • Deep expertise in Linux kernel networking and eBPF program development (XDP, TC hooks, BPF map types, kernel-space packet processing).
  • Strong systems programming skills in C or Rust for eBPF development, and Go or Python for control-plane agent and tooling.
  • Solid understanding of real-world internet routing (BGP, ASN topology, CIDR allocation, inter-AS peering).
  • Experience designing systems with control plane and data plane separation, especially with intermittent connectivity.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership (setting architectural direction, driving engineering quality).
  • Comfort at the intersection of research and production engineering.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes for deployment of control plane services and distributed agent components.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with network simulation, traffic shaping, or cyber range infrastructure.
  • Prior work in cybersecurity, defense, or government-adjacent environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end architecture of the eBPF-based routing simulation layer, including XDP and TC hook point design, BPF map structure, and synthetic ICMP TTL-exceeded generation.
  • Design and build the control-plane topology database and the pipeline for processing real-world internet topology data.
  • Architect the in-range proxy agent for local topology configuration, DNS delegation, and traffic forwarding.
  • Define the interface contract between the control plane and in-range agents, covering topology updates, graceful degradation, and agent lifecycle management.
  • Serve as technical lead for the team, making architectural decisions, conducting design reviews, and ensuring engineering quality.
  • Partner with other Engineers on simulation challenges, contribute independent judgment to architectural tradeoffs, and shape the technical roadmap.
  • Mentor engineers on systems design, kernel-level debugging, and engineering rigor.
  • Collaborate with adjacent platform teams on the operational model for a long-lived, multi-tenant service.
