About The Position

Squarespace is looking for a Senior Software Engineer 2 to join the Business Email team, which powers one of our high-growth product areas and plays a critical role in helping entrepreneurs succeed. As part of the Engineering team, you’ll build scalable backend systems that support customer-facing email experiences. The team’s work spans rearchitecting legacy systems and building new product capabilities across our core Email platform. This is a hybrid role based in our NYC office (3 days per week), reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager of Email.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with deep backend expertise and a track record of delivering complex systems in production.
  • Strong proficiency in Java and experience building distributed backend systems and RESTful APIs, ideally using frameworks such as Spring.
  • Experience leading technically ambiguous projects with end-to-end ownership, including defining scope, evaluating feasibility, and driving execution to launch.
  • Strong system design and architectural judgment, with the ability to make sound trade-offs across scale, reliability, and product velocity.
  • Expertise with databases, asynchronous processing, and message-driven systems such as Kafka.

Responsibilities

  • Own the design, implementation, and long-term evolution of backend services in Java that support the Email product and integrations.
  • Drive architecture and system design decisions that improve reliability, scalability, performance, and maintainability across the team’s systems.
  • Partner closely with Product, Design, QA, DevOps, and peer engineering teams to align requirements, resolve competing priorities, and deliver the best solution for customers and the business.
  • Influence technical direction beyond your immediate team by improving decision-making, communicating standards, and helping shape engineering best practices.
  • Mentor and coach engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and hands-on collaboration, multiplying the effectiveness of the broader team.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, participate in on-call rotations, and advocate for strong observability and operational excellence across the platform.
