Senior Software Engineer (Internal Tools)

RelayToronto, ON
CA$144,000 - CA$176,000Onsite

About The Position

Relay is a digital banking platform that gives self-made business owners the tools and know-how to be great with money—bringing clarity, confidence, and control to every dollar earned, so they can turn hard work into lasting success. We do this by replacing financial guesswork with real visibility, transforming cash flow from a constant source of stress into a clear signal owners can use to run stronger, more resilient businesses. Our Engineering team is at the heart of building banking products that help millions of small businesses succeed. We’re on a journey to reinvent banking, and we’re looking for a curious, impact-driven Senior Software Engineer (Internal Tools) to join our growing team – someone who thrives on taking smart risks, experimenting boldly, and learning from every challenge. This role is for someone who’s energized by removing friction. You'll replace manual processes with real software, turn spreadsheets and one-off scripts into scalable systems, and build the admin surfaces and workflows that let our internal teams support a rapidly growing customer base. The feedback loop is unusually tight: your users are your teammates, and you'll see the impact of what you ship within days. If you're motivated by building software that makes a whole company faster, you'll feel right at home here.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of full-stack software engineering experience; internal tooling is a plus
  • Led the development of significant components or features, delivering them successfully with minimal oversight
  • Energized by internal-facing work and see making teams more efficient as a meaningful engineering outcome
  • Comfortable doing your own product discovery, talking directly to internal users, asking why a process exists, and proposing a better one
  • Mentor junior engineers, sharing expertise and fostering the growth and skill development of the entire team
  • Proactively drive enhancements and lead initiatives to enhance code quality, optimize performance, and streamline development processes
  • Lifelong learner, curious about new frameworks, best practices, and emerging technologies
  • Thrive in fast-paced, dynamic environments and are comfortable navigating ambiguity and change
  • Collaborative team player, eager to pitch in, ask questions, and provide and receive feedback

Nice To Haves

  • Worked in startups or high-growth tech companies
  • Built internal tooling, admin platforms, or back-office systems, particularly in fintech, banking, or another regulated industry
  • Experience with JavaScript – we primarily use TypeScript, React, and Node.js
  • Working knowledge of AWS services (ECS, S3, RDS, Dynamo, Lambda) and continuous deployment pipelines

Responsibilities

  • Own internal tool features across the full development lifecycle, from design and development through testing, deployment, and monitoring, ensuring reliability and performance at scale
  • Manage production systems, optimize infrastructure, and contribute to the availability, scalability, and resilience of our platform
  • Run your own discovery by sitting with the teams you build for, understanding their workflows, and prioritizing based on real operational pain rather than a handed-down backlog
  • Proactively identify areas for technical, process, and product improvement, helping the team raise the bar and influencing technical direction and long-term strategy

Benefits

  • Compensation follows impact. As impact increases, compensation grows, and we do not limit compensation changes to a once-a-year review cycle.
  • Perks and benefits
