About The Position

Waymo is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their In-field Behavior Response team. This role focuses on solving complex, on-road challenges within the autonomous driving behavior stack. The engineer will work on critical domains such as Service Quality Reasoning (protecting Waymo's brand in various scenarios) and Intersection & Pedestrian Reasoning (mitigating safety risks in high-stakes environments). The position involves rapidly triaging and resolving in-field issues, directly launching features to address behavioral problems, and contributing to the Onboard RRG working group. When not actively responding to production issues, the engineer will collaborate with their Team Lead Manager (TLM) to enhance production monitoring and response capabilities within the organization.

Requirements

  • BS/MS/PHD in Computer Science, similar technical field of study, or equivalent practical experience
  • General software engineering experience programming in C++ with robust and efficient code
  • A “Breadth-First” mindset – you love learning about new things & thinking about how to make them better.
  • Ability to collaborate within and across teams
  • Ability to rapidly ramp up on new codebases/projects

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years of Software Engineering experience
  • Experience with data mining and analysis, e.g., using SQL, to collect & analyze data
  • Familiarity with ML systems

Responsibilities

  • Deploy to rapidly triage and root cause an active in-field issue.
  • Directly launch features across the onboard and offboard stack to mitigate or solve in-field behavioral issues.
  • Actively participate in the Onboard RRG working group, fulfilling its responsibilities, with an option to be an eng on-call member.
  • Improve production monitoring and response capabilities of the organization when not actively deployed to solve high priority in-field production issues.
