Senior Software Engineer II (Hybrid)

HomebaseDenver, CO
$180,000 - $215,000Hybrid

About The Position

As a Senior Software Engineer II on our Identity & Notifications team, you'll own the systems that power Homebase's "Passport to Work" vision — the unified identity layer that follows a user across their entire work journey. That means authentication, authorization, role modeling across complex multi-tenant contexts, and the notification infrastructure that keeps workers and business owners informed, in real time, without noise. This is a high-ownership, high-visibility platform role. You'll be shaping how identity works at Homebase for the next decade — and building the notification rails that connect millions of people to the moments that matter.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of backend engineering experience with meaningful ownership of production systems at scale.
  • Deep expertise in identity systems — authentication protocols (OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML), session management, token lifecycle (JWT, refresh tokens, revocation), and authorization modeling (RBAC, ABAC, or policy-based access control).
  • Experience designing multi-tenant identity models — ideally in contexts where a single user holds multiple roles across multiple organizations or employment states.
  • Hands-on experience building or operating notification infrastructure — delivery pipelines, fan-out architecture, user preference management, and multi-channel routing (push, email, in-app).
  • Strong command of at least one backend language (Ruby, Go, Python, or similar) and relational database design.
  • Track record of leading technical design — writing RFCs, driving alignment across teams, and executing through real ambiguity.
  • Active AI fluency: you use tools like GitHub Copilot, Cursor, or LLM-based assistants to meaningfully accelerate your workflow, and you can speak to the measured impact.
  • Security-minded by default — you think about identity and notification systems through the lens of abuse, spoofing, privilege escalation, and data privacy before they become incidents.
  • Clear, direct communicator who can translate system complexity into decisions stakeholders can act on.

Nice To Haves

  • Retool your workflows using AI-powered development tools (e.g., Copilot, Cursor, LLM-assisted code review and security analysis).
  • Measure the impact — faster cycle times, reduced auth incident MTTR, improved notification deliverability. You can speak to what changed and why.
  • Experiment actively with emerging AI applications relevant to identity and notifications — anomaly detection, intelligent delivery timing, abuse pattern recognition.
  • Participate in team-wide AI fluency sharing — what's working, what's not, and what's next.

Responsibilities

  • Own identity end-to-end. Design and build the systems that manage user authentication, session lifecycle, and authorization across Homebase's multi-role, multi-employer context. One user. Many states. Zero confusion.
  • Model complex authorization. Lead the design of role-based and attribute-based access control (RBAC/ABAC) systems that reflect the real-world complexity of how small business teams work — managers, employees, owners, and everything in between.
  • Build notification infrastructure that scales. Design and operate the backend systems powering push, email, and in-app notification delivery — reliably, at scale, with intelligent routing and preference management.
  • Drive architectural decisions. Write the RFCs, lead the design reviews, and set the technical direction for your domain. Your decisions establish the standard.
  • Ship with velocity. Break down ambiguous problems fast, make high-quality calls you stand behind, and get working systems into production without waiting for perfect.
  • Build with AI. Actively integrate AI tooling into your engineering workflow — from code generation and security review acceleration to intelligent notification personalization and abuse detection. Retool how the work gets done, and show the impact.
  • Elevate the team. Mentor peers, share knowledge generously, and raise the bar in every design review and code review you touch.
  • Collaborate across the stack. Partner with Product, Security, and feature-domain engineering teams to deliver identity and notification capabilities that unlock the rest of the platform roadmap.
