About The Position

Pax8 is hiring a Senior Software Engineer II (Remote, USA) to build resilient billing and invoicing services that power our marketplace — and to help shape how modern engineering teams deliver with quality and AI-enabled acceleration. This is a high-impact, hands-on engineering role on our Invoicing/Billing Engineering team, where your work directly supports the monthly billing run that keeps Pax8 moving. You’ll own complex backend services end-to-end, raise the technical bar through mentorship and thoughtful design, and help modernize a legacy estate into scalable microservices — all while growing alongside Pax8’s evolving, pragmatic approach to artificial intelligence (AI) tooling in day-to-day delivery.

Requirements

  • Substantial backend engineering experience, ideally building services in Java with Spring/Spring Boot in production environments.
  • Proven ability to design and ship microservices and work effectively with distributed, highly available systems.
  • Confidence navigating large, evolving codebases — refactoring safely, reducing risk, and improving systems incrementally.
  • Strong engineering judgement around quality, testing strategy, reliability, and operational readiness.
  • A collaborative mindset — you can mentor others, give constructive feedback, and influence through clarity and example.
  • Comfort operating in ambiguity and making progress when the path forward isn’t perfectly defined.
  • A pragmatic approach to AI-enabled tooling — you use it to accelerate real delivery (not as a substitute for fundamentals), and you take full ownership of what ships.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call rotations and support critical billing windows with calm, focused execution.
  • Must hold valid right to work in USA.

Responsibilities

  • Build backend services that matter — design, develop, test, deploy, and support core billing and invoicing workflows that run at scale.
  • Own complex problems end-to-end — from shaping a solution to shipping it safely, monitoring it in production, and continuously improving it.
  • Modernize the platform — help drive legacy-to-microservices migration to improve scalability, deplorability, and maintainability.
  • Partner across the business — collaborate closely with engineers, product partners, and adjacent teams to land outcomes that solve real problems.
  • Lead through craft and clarity — contribute to design and code reviews, share patterns, and mentor teammates to raise quality and consistency.
  • Join the on-call rotation — with increased responsibility during monthly billing runs and lighter coverage outside billing windows.
  • Use AI responsibly to accelerate delivery — leverage modern AI tools to speed up scaffolding, refactoring, documentation, and throughput while owning correctness, performance, and maintainability.
