Senior Software Engineer II - Enterprise Foundations

Instacart
•$192,000 - $242,500•Remote

About The Position

Enterprise Foundations is responsible for architectural and integration work that enables Instacart's Retailer Platform to scale across large grocers. The team's work includes omnichannel integrations, enterprise extensibility such as sandbox environments and configuration systems, retailer-facing tooling, and data isolation that supports bespoke machine-learning models. As Instacart expands its enterprise retail business to more partner brands and international markets, this role will help mature the platform. The Senior Software Engineer II will own and ship a complex, multi-quarter workstream involving areas such as omnichannel identity, international storefront search, or partner-owned integrations that Instacart will ultimately operate. This person will act as the technical DRI for their area, working with Staff engineers and collaborating across Connected Stores, Professional Services, Commerce, Search, Data Engineering, and ML. The role is remote and follows Instacart's Flex First approach, which allows employees to choose where they work while participating in regular in-person events.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of backend software engineering experience.
  • A track record of owning complex, multi-quarter projects end to end as a senior individual contributor.
  • Ability to act as the technical DRI for cross-team workstreams: proactively frame problems, recommend options, identify risks, and drive execution through adoption.
  • Experience designing and shipping production distributed systems and integrations spanning multiple services, teams, or external partners.
  • Strong proficiency with production backend technologies such as Ruby/Rails, Python, Go, or similar.
  • Experience with relational databases, distributed data systems, and cloud infrastructure such as AWS or GCP.
  • Track record of producing durable technical artifacts, including ERDs, design documents, runbooks, and reusable patterns.
  • Ability to operate in ambiguous, high-growth environments and drive clarity and forward motion while partner roadmaps and integration commitments are maturing.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience in commerce platforms, omnichannel retail, OMS, POS, catering systems, or connected-store/in-store technology.
  • Experience with customer identity, account linking, or SSO integrations across multiple consumer-facing surfaces.
  • Experience building or scaling search, retrieval, or ranking systems, including integrations with third-party search providers.
  • Background in international expansion, including localization, data residency, multi-region infrastructure, or in-country compliance requirements.
  • Experience leading vendor- or partner-owned integrations where the integrating team ultimately operates and owns the system.
  • Experience designing per-tenant configuration, isolation, and extensibility for multi-tenant enterprise platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Own a multi-quarter integration workstream end to end, from problem framing and design through implementation, rollout, and deprecation of legacy paths.
  • Drive the technical direction of the assigned area by preparing ERDs, proposing options, making and defending trade-off decisions, and guiding partner teams through design reviews and written artifacts.
  • Lead vendor and cross-team integrations that Instacart will eventually own, advocating for observability, fallback behavior, and cost and latency guardrails.
  • Build reusable patterns, frameworks, and templates that engineers across Enterprise Foundations and adjacent teams can adopt with minimal support.
  • Produce system-at-a-glance documentation and migration runbooks as part of the deliverables.
  • Contribute hands-on as a senior individual contributor on high-leverage technical work, raising standards for design, code quality, observability, and operational rigor.
  • Mentor junior engineers, delegate defined implementation work while retaining technical ownership, and act as a technical peer to senior and Staff engineers in adjacent organizations.

Benefits

  • New-hire equity grant and annual refresh grants.
  • Market-competitive compensation and benefits, varying by work location.
