About The Position

Reporting to the Engineering Manager - Agentic Care, this Senior Software Engineer will develop AI-driven features that improve how members discover and engage with care. This role is part of the Care Innovation team and is instrumental in delivering intuitive, reliable user experiences at scale. This is a hybrid role based in San Francisco with an expectation to be in the office 2-3 days per week at our 44 Montgomery Street location. Candidates must be based in the San Francisco Bay Area or able to relocate independently within 90 days of their start date. Occasional travel will be required for team on-sites.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional software development experience
  • 3+ years of experience with Ruby on Rails or Python
  • Strong proficiency in building backend applications, prompt engineering, and developing AI agents.
  • Experience integrating AI/ML features or LLM-powered services in production
  • Actively uses AI coding tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot) and iterates on prompts to get high-quality, system-aware outputs—while critically reviewing all AI-generated code for correctness, security, and standards compliance
  • Experience leading technical designs and multi-person engineering projects
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a focus on delivering clean, maintainable, secure code
  • Comfortable working on an agile team; curious about learning new things, including evolving AI capabilities
  • Proven ability to mentor and develop other engineers
  • Embraces writing well-designed tests that accompany all code

Responsibilities

  • Integrating emerging AI technologies into the member experience
  • Own the technical design and delivery of full-stack agentic AI systems
  • Design and build scalable full-stack services using Ruby on Rails and Python.
  • Expand and maintain existing web applications and AI services
  • Write, review, and optimize production-ready code daily while making key technical decisions and holding a high bar for code quality.
  • Lead technical design reviews and produce technical designs as a primary author—delivering elegant solutions to complex problems.
  • Use AI tools (e.g., Claude, Copilot) to support technical design, explore tradeoffs, accelerate delivery, and augment code reviews—while critically evaluating all AI-generated output to ensure it meets team quality and security standards.
  • Identify repeatable tasks that can be accelerated with AI; guide junior engineers on effective and responsible AI usage.
  • Lead multi-person, multi-sprint projects: coordinate execution, manage dependencies and tradeoffs, and build alignment across stakeholders.
  • Raise and address security concerns in PRs and designs; proactively highlight performance implications and conduct load/performance testing.
  • Drive engineering best practices within your team—your code quality and approach serve as a model for others.
  • Mentor and actively develop engineers at earlier career stages through code reviews, pairing, and direct coaching.
  • Own operational excellence: exemplify best practices in logging, alerting, and monitoring; methodically investigate incidents and provide root cause analyses.
