Senior Software Engineer I, AI Enablement (Remote)

Symetra,
$106,400 - $177,300Remote

About The Position

Symetra's AI Enablement team is a fast-growing team of builders inside our Data Analytics organization. Our goal is to accelerate AI adoption across the company in two ways: by building shared platforms, tooling, and patterns that let other teams effectively integrate AI into their workflows, and by shipping AI-powered applications for the most important use cases. We work in small, cross-functional teams, build with the people who use what we make, and move fast. Our first product in production, docstream, is an AI-powered document-processing platform that currently supports several of Symetra's back-end operational processes. We plan to continue to iterate on docstream and to build out other products using the same modular architecture, integrating third-party products where it makes sense. As a Senior Software Engineer I, you'll deliver solutions to internal customers on one of these teams. You'll build the core capabilities and APIs behind our products, and the lightweight interfaces (e.g. web, browser extension) on top of them. You'll contribute to the patterns we share across the team and help the more junior engineers around you grow.

Requirements

  • An experienced engineer (typically 5+ years) who delivers work with minimal guidance and contributes to design within a team.
  • Built and operated production services and APIs.
  • Comfortable building and deploying services in the cloud (AWS or Google Cloud), including containers.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication; excited to work with other engineering teams and business stakeholders who are your internal customers.
  • Use AI coding agents effectively in your day-to-day work, with the judgment to know when to use them and when not to.

Nice To Haves

  • Built LLM-powered applications (prompting, retrieval/RAG, evaluations, agents, MCP).
  • Familiarity with AWS Bedrock or other model-hosting platforms.
  • Infrastructure-as-code with AWS CDK.
  • Frontend development with TypeScript and React.
  • Document-processing, OCR, or data-extraction experience.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver secure, high-quality, performant code, and build reusable solutions for others to use.
  • Contribute to design: implement patterns, take part in design reviews, and help shape our architecture.
  • Help improve how we test, automate, and deliver code.
  • Support security, performance, and reliability, and take part in root-cause analysis on production issues.
  • Mentor junior engineers on the team.

Benefits

  • Flexible full-time or hybrid telecommuting arrangements
  • 401(k) plan with immediate vesting and company matching up to 6%
  • Paid time away including vacation and sick time, flex days and ten paid holidays
  • Company matching for community contributions
