Senior Software Engineer, Full-Stack

Epic Kids Inc.
•$160,000 - $210,000•Remote

About The Position

Epic Kids is a digital reading platform for children 12 and under, offering books, videos, and educational content through a safe and engaging experience. The company describes its team as collaborative, fast-paced, and global, with a focus on products that support children's education and literacy. The Senior Software Engineer, Full-Stack owns features end-to-end across Epic's web application, including its Angular front end, PHP/Symfony and Go services, and MySQL database. The role contributes to engineering quality and works closely with a global team with members in the US and China. It is fully remote and US-based. The company values engineering strength over prior experience with a particular stack, with the expectation that strong engineers can ramp up on its technologies.

Requirements

  • At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, including autonomous ownership of complex, cross-team work.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong front-end engineering skills with a modern component framework; Angular is a plus.
  • Solid TypeScript/JavaScript skills and UI fundamentals, including HTML, CSS, and accessibility.
  • Strong back-end engineering skills in a modern server-side language; the company uses PHP and Go.
  • Relational-database proficiency, including data modeling, performant queries, and indexing.
  • Experience designing and operating production APIs using REST or gRPC.
  • Comfort with Git, pull-request workflows, and CI/CD.

Nice To Haves

  • Direct experience with Angular, PHP/Symfony, Go, and MySQL.
  • Experience leading a production service migration between languages or runtimes, such as PHP to Go.
  • Familiarity with Tera for server-side templating.
  • Application-developer-level experience with Docker and Kubernetes (GKE).
  • Cloud-platform experience; GCP is preferred, while AWS or Azure is acceptable.
  • Experience operating with an observability stack such as New Relic, Datadog, or similar.
  • Awareness of children's-privacy compliance frameworks such as COPPA and FERPA.
  • Proficiency in Mandarin Chinese.

Responsibilities

  • Design and ship features across the full stack, from specification through production.
  • Make architecture, data-modeling, and API-design decisions; document trade-offs and align stakeholders.
  • Drive code quality through code review and testing across front-end and back-end systems.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers through code review and pairing.
  • Lead technical design reviews, RFCs, and architecture discussions.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools to accelerate delivery while holding generated code to the same quality bar.
  • Participate in production support, including investigations, post-mortems, and systemic fixes.
