About The Position

Purpose Brands, the parent company of Orangetheory, Anytime Fitness, Waxing the City, The Bar Method, and Stronger U, is seeking a Senior Software Engineer, Firmware to join our team. Purpose Brands is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Edge Engineering team. In this role you will own, design, create, and maintain our connected fleet of devices. This includes our access control system (Anytime Fitness) and our connected studio experience (Orangetheory Fitness). Our systems combine custom ICs, bespoke vendor hardware, and off-the-shelf components that bring our 7000+ studios to life for our millions of global members. An ideal candidate will have a baseline of embedded engineering experience in addition to familiarity with a connected system (mobile, backend, or other very extensive hardware experience).

Requirements

  • Proven ability to set and hit commitments while maintaining technical excellence
  • Proven ability to self-direct and organize in a fast-paced distributed collaborative environment
  • Proficiency in writing firmware for microcontrollers (C/C++)
  • Proficiency in multithreaded applications (mutexes/threads/pthreads/etc.)
  • Experience in writing and integrating automated test cases (GTest, GMock, etc.)
  • Deep knowledge in at least one "Nice-to-have" section below

Nice To Haves

  • Over 5 years of experience developing hardware products from design to rollout
  • Experience integrating I2C / RS485 / SPI / BLE / digital IO
  • Deep experience with a variety of microcontrollers or projects (ESP32, nRF, Raspberry Pi / Arduino, etc.)
  • Experience reading and debugging wiring diagrams
  • Experience designing hardware projects end-to-end
  • Experience reading and integrating technical specification documentation
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers and logistics
  • Experience with toolchains and build chains (CMake/linkers/etc.)
  • Proven ability debugging intricate hardware problems at global scale
  • Over 5 years of experience delivering real-time connected backend systems
  • Experience developing cloud-native backend applications (.NET/Java/Kotlin/other)
  • Experience developing and integrating microservices
  • Experience developing and integrating AuthZ/AuthN/OAuth2
  • Experience managing certificates and working with cryptographic tools (TLS certificates, OpenSSL CLI, X509 certificates, asymmetric and symmetric keys, etc.)
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/CDK/other)
  • Experience developing build systems and/or managing CI/CD (GitHub Actions, TeamCity, etc.)
  • Experience in mobile development (iOS or Android or both)
  • Experience interfacing with microcontroller BLE in Peripheral and Central modes
  • Experience developing real-time hardware integrations at high fidelity (audio processing, video processing, high frame rates with minimal jitter)
  • Deep interest in all forms of technology
  • Professional or personal projects leveraging microcontrollers
  • Projects involving devices communicating with one another in interesting ways
  • Experience with packet-capture tooling (Wireshark, Logic Analyzers, BLE capture, etc.) or deep networking technology (TCP/UDP/ARP/low-level network stacks)
  • Experience with Apple, Google, or Samsung Wallet development and integration
  • Degree in an appropriate field (Computer Engineering, Software Engineering with a hardware emphasis, etc.)

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the broader Edge Engineering firmware, backend, QA, and lead engineers
  • Design, write, and maintain C++ firmware code for our Access Control System
  • Manage the integration between our hardware and backend systems
  • Identify, design, and develop internal tools for fleet management
  • Write and maintain our automated testing suite
  • Write and maintain our technical documentation
  • Work with hardware design vendors to spec and deliver new hardware revisions
  • Write, develop, and execute acceptability and manual test plans
  • Assist our dedicated support team in debugging intricate hardware problems globally
  • Become the go-to resource for answering deep technical questions on our hardware technology stack
  • Collaborate with our hardware & SaaS vendors to maintain excellent working relationships
  • Collaborate with our Supply Chain, Warehouse, and Provisioning teams to ensure stable product is always available
