Senior Software Engineer, DevOps

About The Position

Caliza is hiring a Senior Software Engineer, DevOps to own and evolve the infrastructure used to run, ship, and monitor its financial software. The role reports to the security and infrastructure lead, with a focus on DevOps, and combines infrastructure work with production software engineering. The engineer will contribute directly to application services and infrastructure code, following the team's standards for review and testing. The position is remote and requires at least four hours of overlap with US Eastern time, as well as professional English. During the first six months, the engineer will learn Caliza's infrastructure and deployment pipelines, help build an agentic development environment, improve monitoring and alerting, strengthen and test disaster recovery and backups, and simplify production of compliance evidence. Caliza handles real-time payments across payment rails and countries, so reliability, security, and safe delivery are central to the work. The company uses AI tools in day-to-day development and expects engineers to understand, test, and take responsibility for changes they ship. Because it handles financial data, Caliza has rules governing which code, configuration, and data may be used with which tools. Benefits vary by country and may include health coverage, paid time off and holidays, a home office or equipment allowance, a professional development budget, and in-person team offsites. Candidates outside the US may be employed through an employer of record or engaged as contractors, with terms structured according to local law and market practice.

Requirements

  • Strong programming skills in at least one general-purpose language, ideally Java or Kotlin, and a track record of shipping and reviewing production code.
  • At least 5 years of experience in infrastructure, DevOps, or SRE roles.
  • Strong experience operating production systems on AWS.
  • Proficiency with Kubernetes in production.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, such as AWS CDK, Terraform, or similar, and with Helm.
  • Experience building CI/CD pipelines, ideally with GitHub Actions.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as New Relic.
  • A security-first mindset, including least-privilege access, secrets management, and network security.
  • Comfort with on-call work and incident response.
  • Hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools in daily work, with the judgment to review and question their output.
  • Comfort with high autonomy and ambiguity in a fast-moving, remote startup.
  • Clear written communication; most collaboration is asynchronous.
  • Professional English.
  • Authorization to work in the country of residence; visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in fintech, payments, or other regulated environments.
  • Experience supporting SOC 2 audits or ISO 27001.
  • Experience working in Spring Boot codebases in Java or Kotlin.
  • Experience with RabbitMQ and MongoDB in production.
  • Experience operating identity and access management systems such as Keycloak.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and evolve Kubernetes-based infrastructure on AWS, using AWS CDK for provisioning and Helm or kubectl for workload deployments.
  • Build and improve deployment pipelines with GitHub Actions.
  • Write and ship production code, including infrastructure as code, internal tooling, and application-service changes such as instrumentation, health checks, and performance fixes.
  • Own observability with New Relic, including dashboards, alerting, and SLOs for critical payment flows.
  • Operate and scale managed services, including CloudAMQP, MongoDB Atlas, and PostgreSQL.
  • Manage secrets, access controls, and identity infrastructure.
  • Design for high availability and disaster recovery, and lead incident response and postmortems.
  • Optimize AWS cost and performance.
  • Partner with engineering and compliance on security controls and audit readiness.
  • Help design and build the agentic development environment.
  • Improve monitoring and alerting to identify payment-impacting issues before customers do.
  • Strengthen and test disaster recovery and backup strategy.
  • Make compliance evidence, including access reviews, change logs, and audit trails, easier to produce.
