Senior Software Engineer — DevOps & Platform, AI Systems

FordDearborn, MI
$97,140 - $192,900Onsite

About The Position

This role is for a software engineer who specializes in infrastructure and prefers building systems that enhance the speed and efficiency of product teams, rather than working directly on product development. The ideal candidate is an agent orchestrator who leverages AI agents for tasks like generating Infrastructure as Code (IaC), triaging alerts, and drafting runbooks, while focusing on architecture and critical decision-making. The role emphasizes a "productively lazy" mindset, aiming to eliminate toil through automation and code. A strong foundation in Linux, networking, distributed systems, and understanding system failures under load is crucial. The position requires a first-principles thinker with a vision for designing systems that account for failure modes, simplify complexity, and scale for future growth. High agency is valued, encouraging individuals to proactively identify and implement solutions within a large enterprise context.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in a real programming language, with a preference for Python and/or Go, capable of writing production code.
  • Experience with GCP services such as Cloud Run, GKE, Cloud Functions, networking, and IAM, including design, deployment, and operation at scale.
  • Skills in IaC & CI/CD tools like Terraform, Cloud Build, GitHub Actions, or equivalents, for reproducible, version-controlled, and peer-reviewed infrastructure.
  • Experience with containers and orchestration, specifically Docker and Kubernetes in production environments.
  • Strong understanding of observability concepts, including metrics, logs, and tracing, with the ability to diagnose issues effectively.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools and agent workflows, understanding their capabilities and limitations.
  • Fundamentals in reliability and security, including SLOs, incident response, and security-by-default practices in pipelines.
  • BS in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 3+ years in DevOps, SRE, or platform engineering with a focus on software engineering.
  • 2+ years on cloud-native platforms (GCP preferred), operating production systems.
  • Demonstrable experience in building automation to eliminate toil.

Nice To Haves

  • MS degree
  • AI workload experience, such as running LLM/agentic systems, GPUs, or model-serving infrastructure in production.

Responsibilities

  • Build the platform: Design and operate the cloud-native foundation on GCP, including compute, networking, and observability, and establish golden paths for other teams.
  • Automate everything that shouldn't be manual: Implement infrastructure-as-code, self-service pipelines, and auto-remediation to eliminate repetitive human tasks.
  • Orchestrate agents for ops: Utilize AI to assist in drafting IaC, generating tests, triaging incidents, and summarizing information, with the engineer directing, reviewing, and hardening the output.
  • Own CI/CD end to end: Develop and maintain fast, reliable, and reproducible delivery pipelines that enable engineers to ship frequently with confidence.
  • Engineer reliability in: Implement SLOs, monitoring, meaningful alerting, and improve incident response processes to make on-call duties less demanding.
  • Secure the path: Integrate security and compliance into the platform, including secrets management, least privilege, and supply-chain hygiene.
  • Support AI workloads: Build and manage the infrastructure for running LLM and agentic systems in production, focusing on scaling, cost control, and AI-specific deployment patterns.
