We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer with 8+ years of experience to design, architect, develop, and evolve modern, distributed, scalable, and high-performance Content Management Systems (CMS) using Java, open-source technologies, and modern software engineering practices. This role is critical to the evolution of Apple’s brand as you will be working with the teams taking apple.com to the next phase of its evolution. The role is primarily focused on CMS engineering, content architecture, content modeling, workflows, versioning, localization, publishing, APIs, integrations, search, and large-scale content delivery. The engineer will provide technical leadership in designing and delivering complex CMS capabilities and will drive solutions across the end-to-end content lifecycle. We are looking for engineers who are passionate about building modern CMS platforms, solving complex content management problems at scale, and leveraging AI-assisted engineering and agentic workflows to improve both CMS capabilities and software development productivity. This role provides an opportunity to provide technical leadership while building modern, distributed, and large-scale Content Management Systems that power apple.com and enable content to be created, managed, governed, localized, and delivered across multiple digital experiences. You will work across Java backend services, CMS platforms, content architecture, content modeling, workflows, APIs, integrations, search, distributed systems, cloud technologies, and AI-powered engineering workflows. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be expected to lead the technical design of complex CMS capabilities, influence architectural direction, mentor engineers, and remain hands-on in implementation. The role is suited for an engineer who enjoys solving complex CMS and distributed-systems problems at scale and is excited about the evolution of CMS platforms through headless architectures, open-source technologies, automation, and AI agents. The primary focus of this role is CMS engineering, technical design leadership, and end-to-end ownership of complex CMS capabilities.

Requirements

10+ years of professional software development experience designing and developing complex, highly available, and scalable enterprise web applications using Java and the JVM ecosystem.
Expertise in Java (Java 11 or later) and the Spring / Spring Boot ecosystem, including Spring MVC, Spring Data, Spring Security, and reactive or asynchronous programming models.
A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience, with a focus on fundamentals in data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented design.
Experience architecting and delivering distributed Java microservices and RESTful or GraphQL web services at scale.
Experience designing and architecting SQL and NoSQL data models for large content repositories.
Expertise in JVM performance tuning, profiling, concurrency, and memory management in production systems.
Experience with Java build and CI/CD tooling such as Maven or Gradle, Git, and Jenkins, and with Docker and Kubernetes.
Strong testing discipline with JUnit, Mockito, and integration/contract testing frameworks.
Demonstrated ability to lead technical design, mentor engineers, and build consensus across creative, technical, and business partners.
Deep hands-on experience with Java-based CMS or content platforms, including custom component, workflow, and API development.
Experience with CMS, DAM, and PIM solutions and integrations supporting content-as-a-service at scale with high security standards.
Experience with multi-tier caching and search technologies for real-time content delivery (Redis, Memcached, CDN, Elasticsearch, Solr).
Experience with event-driven architectures and streaming platforms such as Kafka.
Experience with distributed logging and monitoring tools such as Splunk and Grafana.
Hands-on experience integrating AI/ML models and AI coding assistants into applications and engineering workflows to drive automation and operational excellence.

Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (React / Vue / Angular) for CMS authoring interfaces.

Responsibilities

Provide technical leadership and design ownership for major CMS capabilities and initiatives spanning the content lifecycle.
Architect, design, develop, customize, and extend the distributed, large-scale CMS platforms that power apple.com and other Apple digital experiences, supporting high volumes of content.
Drive the architecture and evolution of CMS content models, content relationships, metadata, taxonomy, workflows, approvals, versioning, localization, publishing, and delivery.
Lead the design and implementation of headless and API-first CMS architectures enabling content delivery across web, mobile, and other digital channels.
Design and develop REST and GraphQL APIs for content authoring, management, preview, search, and delivery using Java and Spring Boot.
Design and build integrations between CMS platforms and search, digital asset management, identity, analytics, CDN, and other enterprise systems.
Define and drive solutions for scalability, high availability, resiliency, fault tolerance, performance, and efficient content delivery in distributed environments.
Design and implement caching, indexing, asynchronous processing, event-driven architectures, and data pipelines for large-scale CMS workloads.
Drive database architecture and data modeling strategies supporting large content repositories, efficient content retrieval, versioning, and content relationships.
Architect, develop, and maintain supporting backend services and microservices in Java, using Spring Boot and related frameworks, based on the overall CMS architecture.
Work hands-on with Java-based open-source CMS platforms and frameworks, evaluating, extending, and customizing them to meet evolving product and business requirements.
Lead technical design discussions and make architecture and technology decisions, balancing scalability, performance, maintainability, developer productivity, and business requirements.
Establish and promote engineering best practices, Java design patterns, coding standards, testing strategies, and operational practices across the CMS platform.
Deploy and operate CMS services using Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms.
Drive troubleshooting and resolution of complex CMS, performance, scalability, integration, and production issues, including JVM performance profiling, memory, and concurrency tuning.
Develop unit, integration, and API tests using JUnit and related Java testing frameworks, and contribute to CI/CD, engineering automation, and developer productivity initiatives.
Conduct and participate in architecture reviews, technical design reviews, and code reviews, providing constructive technical guidance to engineers.
Mentor and guide engineers on Java and CMS architecture, distributed systems, software design, and engineering best practices.
Identify opportunities to simplify and improve the CMS architecture, workflows, and developer experience through automation and platform engineering.
Leverage AI coding assistants and AI agents to improve development productivity, code quality, testing, documentation, technical design, and engineering workflows.
Explore and lead the development of AI-powered CMS capabilities and agentic workflows for content creation, transformation, validation, localization, governance, search, and other CMS use cases.
Collaborate closely with product managers, architects, software engineers, frontend engineers, DevOps teams, and content stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions.
Drive projects from technical requirements and architecture through implementation, deployment, and production operation, ensuring high-quality end-to-end delivery.
