About The Position

FlightAware is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join their Backend team. This role involves engineering backend software for web-based products that serve billions of views to industry partners and consumers. FlightAware operates the world's leading aviation software platform, processing over 180 million messages per hour from more than 34,000 data feeds. The Backend team builds and maintains state-of-the-art systems that power the FlightAware website and mobile apps, acting as the single source of truth for every flight tracked. These systems manage data feeds, dispatch live flight updates, and coordinate communication from pre-departure to arrival. The team also develops interfaces for self-service account management, subscription management, billing, and accounting services. As a software engineer at FlightAware, you will be part of a collaborative, ambitious, and innovative organization that values intellectual curiosity and technical excellence. The team is dedicated to building excellent internal tooling and providing strong engineering support to foster a productive environment. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are expected, with a focus on clear communication, open feedback, trust, and independent project execution.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship now or in the future.
  • Experience as a Software Engineer using languages and technologies such as Go, Rust, C++, PostgreSQL, MySQL or similar.
  • Understand why a clear (API) contract is important in software engineering.

Nice To Haves

  • Participated in a collaborative environment using practices such as pair programming, Agile standups and retrospectives, peer code review, etc.
  • Experience with cloud technologies and platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Kubernetes.
  • Experience supporting microservice architectural paradigms such as service meshes, API contracts, message/event queues, asynchronous workflows, and graphql interfaces.
  • Experience with large-scale SaaS systems using data storage and caching technologies such as PostgreSQL (or other SQL) databases, PostGIS, TimescaleDB, Redis, Dragonfly or similar.
  • Integration experience with advertising networks, billing, or accounting systems.
  • Knowledge of cloud native tools like Flux, Open Telemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, Terraform, or similar.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices and secure software design.
  • A track record of acquiring new skills, proactively solving problems, applying new technology in the workplace and openness to new approaches.
  • A private pilot, looking to pursue a private pilot license, or have a passion for aviation.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to building new features from scratch and bring them to production.
  • Build and scale FlightAware’s backend infrastructure, including streaming data feeds, databases, queueing systems, compute infrastructure, and analysis engines.
  • Ensure customers have a seamless self-service account management experience, integrating with subscription, billing, and accounting management systems.
  • Ensure secure customer access to services and correct provisioning according to purchased products.
  • Collaborate with teams across FlightAware to deliver cloud-native microservices powering the website, mobile apps, and data reporting.
  • Write high-quality, well-tested code to meet the needs of large airlines and airports.
