About The Position

The Android/AOSP Software Engineer designs, develops, integrates, and maintains embedded Android platform software for custom hardware. The role focuses on Android Open-Source Project (AOSP) platform development and customization, including the Android Framework, system services, native components, hardware abstraction layers (HAL), platform integration, and the underlying Linux platform. The engineer works across the Android software stack to bring up new hardware platforms, integrate device-specific functionality, diagnose system-level issues, optimize performance and reliability, and ensure platform compatibility. The role may also involve Linux kernel configuration, device drivers, networking, security, and supporting software required for embedded Android products. The position includes collaboration across hardware, platform, application, validation, security, and other engineering teams, as well as maintaining software throughout the product lifecycle. The stated annual salary range is $112,000–$188,000. The final offer may vary based on factors including skills, experience, job-related knowledge, and location.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 8 years of professional software development experience, with significant experience in embedded systems, Android platform development, or AOSP; alternatively, a Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Software Engineering and at least 6 years of relevant software development experience; or at least 12 years of related software development experience in lieu of a degree.
  • Strong hands-on experience with AOSP platform development, customization, integration, or porting.
  • Strong understanding of Android system architecture and internals, including Framework, system services, Binder/IPC, HAL, native services, and the Android boot/runtime environment.
  • Strong programming skills in C/C++ and experience developing within a Linux environment.
  • Experience with Java and/or Kotlin for Android platform or system-level development.
  • Experience with Linux system programming, debugging, and development tools.
  • Experience debugging complex problems across multiple layers of the Android stack.
  • Experience with source-control and collaborative development workflows using Git/Gerrit or equivalent tools.
  • Hands-on experience using AI-assisted software development tools for code generation, debugging, refactoring, code analysis, test development, or documentation, and ability to review and validate AI-generated code and technical output.
  • Valid authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, customize, integrate, and maintain AOSP platform software for embedded and custom hardware platforms.
  • Perform Android platform bring-up and porting across the Android Framework, system services, native components, HAL, Linux kernel, and device-specific software.
  • Develop and modify Android Framework components, system services, native services, and platform-level functionality.
  • Develop and integrate HAL interfaces using AIDL/HIDL, JNI/native components, and hardware-specific services as required.
  • Diagnose and resolve system-level issues involving Android Framework, system services, process lifecycle, boot, IPC/Binder, networking, multimedia, storage, security, and hardware integration.
  • Analyze and resolve failures identified through the Android Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) and other applicable platform validation and certification tests.
  • Configure, integrate, and debug the Linux kernel, device drivers, BSP components, boot processes, and hardware interfaces as required for platform bring-up.
  • Design, implement, integrate, test, debug, and optimize software based on product, system, and functional requirements.
  • Analyze system performance, stability, resource utilization, and software behavior to improve reliability, efficiency, boot performance, and runtime performance.
  • Develop software tools, automation, and test utilities to improve development, debugging, integration, validation, and software reuse.
  • Use AI-assisted development tools for code generation, code analysis, debugging, refactoring, test development, documentation, and engineering problem solving, independently validating generated results for correctness, security, performance, and maintainability.
  • Perform code reviews and participate in architecture, design, and interface reviews.
  • Develop and maintain engineering documentation, including architecture and design descriptions, interface specifications, test plans, and technical documentation.
  • Collaborate with hardware, platform, application, validation, security, and other engineering teams to resolve complex cross-functional issues.
  • Support system integration and validation, analyze test results and field issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain software throughout the product lifecycle using established software configuration management, CI/CD, code review, and engineering practices.
