About The Position

The Senior Software Engineer AI will help build infrastructure, tooling, observability, and production systems for AI agents serving legal professionals. The agent platform team uses AI-native engineering practices and agentic coding tools to deliver multiple initiatives, and is rethinking how agents are deployed and operated in production, with an emphasis on earlier quality and safety checks and improved release velocity and stability. The role owns meaningful systems end-to-end and contributes to the next generation of legal AI agents. The engineer will architect and deliver complex agent systems, build on modern LLM APIs and agent infrastructure, strengthen observability and evaluation practices, and advance progressive delivery. The role also contributes to technical design decisions, mentors engineers, and collaborates with product and engineering peers. This is a proactive-recruitment posting that may be used to fill current or future vacancies. The position offers a flexible hybrid working environment for office-based roles, with work-from-anywhere flexibility for up to eight weeks per year. Thomson Reuters describes career development and growth programming, competitive benefits, and opportunities to contribute to community and ESG initiatives. The role may be eligible for an annual bonus. The stated base compensation range is $110,000–$204,200 USD for eligible US locations and $100,000–$145,000 CAD for Ontario, Canada; actual pay depends on factors including knowledge, skills, experience, and internal equity.

Requirements

  • Strong experience architecting and shipping production software systems.
  • Hands-on experience building AI- or LLM-powered products or agentic systems; experience limited to classical machine learning or data science is not sufficient.
  • Direct experience with modern LLM APIs, agent frameworks or SDKs, or agent-to-tool integration protocols.
  • Experience owning complex technical projects end-to-end, from design through production delivery.
  • Strong backend engineering fundamentals, including distributed systems design, service architecture, and cloud infrastructure.
  • Experience with production reliability and observability practices, including monitoring, evaluation pipelines, incident response, and quality regression detection.
  • Ability to mentor engineers and contribute to a strong technical culture.
  • Comfort working autonomously on a fast-moving, senior-heavy team using AI-native and agentic engineering practices.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with developer-facing platforms, plugin or extension systems, or integration ecosystems.
  • Familiarity with progressive delivery practices such as feature flagging, phased rollout, or blue/green deployment at scale.
  • Experience with managed agent runtime infrastructure, such as AWS Bedrock AgentCore or similar.
  • Expertise in legal, regulated, professional-services, or other fiduciary domains.

Responsibilities

  • Architect and deliver complex AI agent systems end-to-end, including multi-component pipelines, tool integrations, and multi-step reasoning for owned initiatives.
  • Build production AI agent systems using modern LLM APIs, agent SDKs, and orchestration or runtime infrastructure, integrating with existing platform services.
  • Contribute to agent observability and evaluation practices, including tracing, automated evaluations, and quality or drift detection.
  • Adopt and extend progressive delivery practices, including feature-flagged rollouts and earlier-stage quality signals.
  • Participate in cross-cutting design reviews and technical decisions, including RFCs and ADRs.
  • Mentor other engineers and share expertise in effective AI-native and agentic development practices.
  • Collaborate with product and engineering peers to translate requirements into technical designs.
