Senior Software Engineer, AI/ML, Google Labs

Google•Mountain View, CA
•$174,000 - $252,000

About The Position

Google software engineers develop technologies that help billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information. They work on projects critical to Google’s needs and may move between teams and projects as the business evolves. Engineers are expected to be versatile, show leadership, and take on problems across the full stack. Google Labs incubates early-stage efforts that support Google’s mission to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. The team explores and applies new technologies to create solutions that could transform how users interact with Google, developing products and capabilities with significant impact over longer timeframes. In this role, you will rapidly test and prototype novel AI agent concepts in four-week exploratory sprints. The work emphasizes learning and feasibility testing over polished code, combining software engineering with product, research, data science, and UX research perspectives. Individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. US compensation is $174,000–$252,000, plus a 15% bonus target, equity, and benefits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
  • At least 5 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages.
  • At least 3 years of experience testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and 1 year of experience with software design and architecture.
  • At least 3 years of experience in speech/audio, reinforcement learning, ML infrastructure, or another ML specialization.
  • At least 3 years of end-to-end machine learning experience, such as model deployment, model evaluation, data processing, and debugging.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field.
  • At least 5 years of experience with data structures and algorithms.
  • At least 1 year of experience in a technical leadership role.
  • Experience developing accessible technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Design and build Minimum Viable Tests (MVTs) and functional prototypes to rapidly de-risk novel AI agent concepts.
  • Execute targeted technical spikes to demonstrate core feasibility and overcome critical architectural hurdles within four-week exploratory sprints.
  • Apply expertise in agentic systems—including planning, memory, context management, tool use, and loops—to prototype and evaluate solutions for design, coding, and product building.
  • Blend responsibilities across software engineering, product management, research, data science, and UX research.
  • Prioritize learning and prototyping over perfect code, designing rapid tests to validate user value, strategic value, and feasibility before committing to substantial infrastructure.
  • Analyze early technical and user signals to evaluate project viability.
