Senior Software Engineer, Actuation and Control Systems

Anduril•Costa Mesa, CA
•$191,000 - $253,000

About The Position

You will own actuation and control software for a maritime autonomous vehicle, developing algorithms that command thrusters, control surfaces, and buoyancy systems to achieve desired depth, heading, speed, and attitude across operating conditions. Reporting to the Navigation and Control lead, you will apply technical expertise and leadership to set objectives, build cross-functional teams, and drive work to completion. The role involves making sound design, analysis, and testing decisions and drawing on experience delivering highly optimized multidisciplinary projects. The position is based within Anduril's Maritime Division, which is developing maritime capabilities and scaling manufacturing through its Arsenal-2 shipyard initiative and Proto-Factory in Orange County, California.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or equivalent.
  • 7+ years of experience in control systems, vehicle dynamics, or robotics software.
  • Experience developing control algorithms such as PID, LQR, model-predictive control, or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in C++ or Rust for embedded control software.
  • Familiarity with MATLAB/Simulink or equivalent modeling environments.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Secret security clearance.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with AUV, UUV, or marine vehicle control systems.
  • Working knowledge of 6-DOF vehicle dynamics modeling.
  • Experience with real-time embedded control implementations.
  • Experience with SITL/HITL testing frameworks.
  • Experience in defense or maritime robotics.

Responsibilities

  • Own vehicle control software for depth, heading, speed, and attitude.
  • Develop and tune control algorithms for underwater vehicle dynamics.
  • Implement control laws on embedded real-time platforms.
  • Build vehicle dynamics models and simulate control response.
  • Define interfaces with GN&C sensors, thruster hardware, and buoyancy actuators.
  • Support software-in-the-loop (SITL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) testing of control software.
  • Perform at-sea tuning and validation during prototype testing.
  • Interface with navigation, propulsion, and buoyancy teams.
  • Travel up to 25% to test sites.
  • Set objectives, build cross-functional teams, and drive work to completion.

Benefits

  • Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers.
  • Top-tier benefits for full-time employees, described as comprehensive and competitive and available at little to no cost to employees.
