Senior Software Development Engineer in Test

Zoox•Foster City, CA
•$205,000 - $245,000

About The Position

Zoox is seeking a Senior Software Development Engineer in Test to join its Release Management Team. The role helps accelerate software releases by ensuring the software is safe and reliable. The engineer develops Hardware-In-Loop tests as developers build new features, supporting the safety case, code quality, and service capabilities. Understanding overall system design and component interactions is important for guiding functional and safety sign-off test methodology. This is a coding-intensive position focused on high-fidelity testing, scalable automation frameworks, and data analysis tools that support compliance with requirements and mission success. The position leads the design and maintenance of large-scale event-driven software- and hardware-in-the-loop test frameworks, CI pipelines, system-failure analysis, safety-requirement test gap analysis, and safety-critical monitor validation. It also provides technical leadership and mentorship to a small group of engineers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a relevant technical field.
  • 7+ years of experience, with demonstrated ownership of 3+ complex projects.
  • Good technical communication skills, including the ability to summarize complex test failures and provide clear impact assessments for tests, tools, and pipelines.
  • Demonstrated experience delivering complex projects in Python, including using AI-based coding for infrastructure development, tooling, and automated test writing.
  • Deep understanding of HIL and SIL methodologies, including real-time fault injection.
  • Ownership of automated testing pipelines from design through implementation and maintenance, using tools such as Bamboo, Buildkite, Jenkins, or similar CI tools, and developing custom automation plugins.
  • Practical knowledge of Linux internals and networking protocols used in high-throughput real-time systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong C++.
  • Pytest customization experience.
  • Background in autonomous systems or safety-critical robotics validation.
  • Experience applying Generative AI or Machine Learning tools to code, audit, and improve test coverage and documentation.
  • Experience with real-time communication protocols such as DDS, I2C, SPI, CAN, or GMSL2.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and maintenance of large-scale event-driven SIL/HIL tests and testing frameworks, using software patterns that improve modularity and reduce code duplication.
  • Architect and manage end-to-end continuous integration pipelines to automate regression-suite execution.
  • Lead root cause analysis for complex system-level failures, developing log-mining scripts and visualization dashboards to triage failures and track performance metrics.
  • Perform gap analyses between high-level safety requirements and technical test implementations, including developing timing and prioritization patterns.
  • Lead end-to-end validation and clearance for safety-critical monitors, such as collision detection systems.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a small group of engineers.

Benefits

  • Paid time off, including sick leave, vacation, and bereavement.
  • Unpaid time off.
  • Zoox Stock Appreciation Rights.
  • Amazon Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
  • Health insurance.
  • Long-term care insurance.
  • Long-term and short-term disability insurance.
  • Life insurance.
  • A sign-on bonus may be offered as part of the compensation package.
