About The Position

nou Systems, Inc. (nSI) is seeking talented builders with high levels of curiosity and strong grounding in fundamentals and engineering first principles for Senior Software Developer roles (front end, back end, and full stack). These positions are within the Technical Solutions Division and JSTC2 Team in Huntsville, Alabama. The role involves building software that provides warfighting training exercise participants with unparalleled access to information about unfolding scenarios. The team is modernizing the interface to underlying warfighting simulations and finding innovative ways to surface deep scenario information, ensuring end users receive the right information at the right time. The team develops Government Off-the-Shelf software used in ongoing warfighting exercises and is looking for developers to accelerate progress on a multi-year product roadmap. Responsibilities include being an integral part of a multidisciplinary software team working on a web-based front end, a large-data-management back end, and on-prem LLM-powered data exploration. Developers are expected to enjoy coding, leverage newer agentic coding approaches, mentor junior developers through code reviews, and collaborate effectively within an Agile/SAFe team structure. A passion for software quality and comfort with developing software delivered on a 10-week cadence are essential. The role involves eliciting end-user needs and scoping work with incomplete information.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related technical field, OR Bachelor’s in those fields plus 4 years of experience above the baseline required qualification.
  • 10+ years of full-time professional experience in software development.
  • 3+ years in technical leadership roles.
  • Must possess or be able to obtain an active Secret Security Clearance.
  • U.S. Citizen.
  • Software development as an individual contributor without agentic coding support.
  • Front end expertise: Typescript (ES6+), Angular (or React + willingness to learn Angular), CSS (Bootstrap).
  • Back end expertise: Go, Python, some C/C++.
  • Production code experience: modular, unit tested, supports integration and end-to-end testing, maintained in source control (Git + GitLab).
  • Scrum Agile software development experience, including active participation in ceremonies (standup, sprint reviews, Product Increment planning).
  • Team-focused development experience: ticket management, constructive peer reviews, backlog management.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with distributed simulation systems, especially Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) messaging.
  • Experience with cloud-ready microservice architecture, including MQTT communication protocol.
  • Comfortable developing in a containerized (Docker) Linux-based (Ubuntu) environment.
  • Experience developing for a Continuous Integration/Continuous Development (CI/CD) pipeline.
  • Front end: Experience with web-based geospatial mapping (Cesium).
  • Back end: Experience with databases (PostgreSQL) and database optimization (indexing, stored procedures, query tuning, data partitioning, normalization/denormalization, table optimization).
  • Experience with newer approaches to using LLMs as a natural language interface to a data store (not just RAG).
  • Active Top Secret clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Enjoy coding while taking advantage of newer agentic coding approaches.
  • Help junior developers level up their skills through mentoring and focused code reviews.
  • Work in tandem with other talented developers, architects, QA, and integration/DevOps.
  • Rise to the challenge of team communication and cohesion in an Agile/SAFe team.
  • Be passionate about the quality of software delivered.
  • Develop software delivered to end users on a 10-week cadence.
  • Help elicit end user needs rather than being handed a pile of DOORS-managed requirements.
  • Scope work even in the absence of perfect information.
  • Mentor and lead technical contributors, acting as a force multiplier.
  • Support software architecture development and contribute to the product’s overall structure.
  • Communicate technical decisions, back them up with quantitative information, and flex with team/project needs.
