About The Position

Eaton's Engineering Services and Electrical Systems division is seeking a motivated Senior Software Developer for its Grid Automation Services team. This team is responsible for developing, maintaining, and supporting software and customer-specific solutions based on our Substation Automation family products. This role is based at Eaton's Americas Innovation Center in Brossard, Québec, and offers hybrid work opportunities. Eaton is transforming power management through digital technologies, and this role will contribute to customer-paid development projects, delivering dependable, simplified, and best-in-class solutions for utilities to manage a smarter grid.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or another relevant program from an accredited institution.
  • More than 5 years of experience in software development, including over 2 years of recent experience in C++ application development.
  • Understanding of object-oriented design and programming concepts, including the use of design patterns.
  • Experience leading and mentoring both junior and senior software developers.
  • Proficiency in English and French (ability to work in both languages). Fluency in both French and English is essential for this position to communicate with colleagues, customers, and partners located in Quebec or outside the province, as well as to understand technical documentation within our industry.
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada without company sponsorship now and in the future.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in software development for embedded devices (multithreading), as well as in building APIs and desktop applications.
  • Familiarity with modern software development and engineering tools, trends, and methodologies such as Jira and Confluence.
  • Strong understanding of core computer science concepts such as data structures and algorithms.
  • In-depth knowledge of IP networking protocols (TCP/UDP/IP) and industrial IP protocols including Modbus TCP, DNP3, and OPC-UA.
  • Experience working in the electric utilities market and/or knowledge of electrical systems.
  • Strong problem-solving and reasoning skills, demonstrating technical innovation and creative solutions.
  • Experience ensuring cybersecurity practices in embedded software and desktop applications.
  • Experience communicating with and providing support to external customers.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze technical specifications and propose innovative solutions.
  • Design, implement, and maintain efficient, reliable, and reusable code in various software languages.
  • Review peer-written code.
  • Participate in the investigation of problems by gathering enough information to find the root causes and fix them.
  • Produce technical documentation.
  • In support tasks and occasionally, develop and document verification test plans, write unit tests and automated integration tests, perform manual testing, and write reports.
  • Collaborate with the customer and internal product team to gather requirements and transform them into generic features that will be integrated in our family of product or solutions and that will be reusable by other customers.
  • Contribute to the development of project specifications and planning (provide input to project planning by estimates of development activities...).
  • Participate in system architectures and designs in collaboration with technical experts.
  • Collaborate with multiple teams across EATON for alignment.
  • Contribute to build a culture of code sharing, inner-sourcing, and reusable platform components.
  • Contribute to the growth of the team by coaching technically junior developers and contractors and collaborating with geographically dispersed teams.
  • Influence the team to align them with consistent SDLC process, tools, and metrics.
