Senior Software Developer

Wenco (a Hitachi Construction Machinery subsidiary)Richmond, BC
Hybrid

About The Position

Wenco International Mining Systems, a subsidiary of Hitachi Construction Machinery, provides industry leading, innovative technologies to customers in the mining and material movement sectors, enabling sustainable and safe operations. Wenco has R&D offices located in Canada and Australia, and this specific role is based in Richmond, B.C. at Wenco's headquarters. The role focuses on hands-on modernization, technical execution, and legacy extraction. Wenco's Fleet Management System is a real-time, mission-critical application that has supported global mining operations for decades. A new team is being built to modernize it, and this Senior Software Developer will be at the core of this effort. The position offers rapid technical growth with broad exposure across modern and legacy stacks, meaningful work on a system that mining operations depend on daily, and the opportunity to make decisions that shape the platform for years to come. The team owns the system end-to-end, providing real ownership of increments and technical decisions. AI is utilized as a first-class tool for analysis, scaffolding, and routine work. This is a multi-year build for engineers who want to go deep on a genuinely hard problem: a decades-old, real-time C++ system where safe extraction is challenging.

Requirements

  • 5+ years in production environments with complex, high-uptime systems.
  • Comfort navigating and changing a large, mature C++ codebase.
  • Experience with two or more of the core languages in use (C++, C#, Python, React).
  • Strong coding ability: You write clean, maintainable, well-tested code (with or without the assistance of AI).
  • Software design: You can reason about service boundaries, data models, and APIs, and make sound architectural trade-offs when carving functionality out of a monolith.
  • Real production delivery: You're comfortable shipping production code to a live, mission-critical system.
  • Ownership: You take ownership, get things done, and see the work through to a high standard.
  • Communication: Clear technical communication and documentation, working effectively with both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Eligible to work in Canada.

Nice To Haves

  • Modernization exposure: You've worked on extracting, migrating, or re-architecting legacy systems. You understand the traps, and you know what safe, incremental modernization actually looks like.
  • AI workflows: Hands-on skill with AI coding assistants and agentic workflows, driving them effectively and knowing where they help and where they don't.
  • Kubernetes: Deploying and operating services on Kubernetes; self-managed / on-prem (k3s) experience is a bonus.
  • Python: Building production services.
  • React: Building and maintaining front ends for the new applications.
  • C#: Part of our existing stack.
  • CI/CD & infrastructure as code: Azure DevOps pipelines, Terraform, Ansible, and scripting in Bash or PowerShell.
  • Observability: The Grafana stack (Grafana, Loki, and related tooling) for metrics, logs, traces, and dashboards.
  • Test automation: Testing across unit, integration, end-to-end, and UI automation, with tools like pytest, Playwright, and Gherkin-based behaviour specs.
  • Domain experience: Fleet management, mining, or other industrial / real-time / device-comms systems.
  • Community contributions: Contributions to internal platforms or open source.

Responsibilities

  • Understand the existing codebase: Read the existing C++ codebase well enough to make safe extraction and refactoring decisions, not risky rewrites.
  • Shape the architecture: Help define the high-level architecture: how functionality is carved out of the monolith, where service boundaries fall, and how the modern platform fits together.
  • Own the design: Design the software you build: architecture, data models, APIs, and how new services interoperate with the legacy system during the transition.
  • Write production code daily: Build new services on a modern stack: Kubernetes python microservices and React front ends, as functionality is extracted from the monolith.
  • Deliver end to end: Manage build, release, and deployment infrastructure & processes.
  • Build in observability: Ship instrumented code with logs, metrics, and traces, surfaced through the Grafana stack.
  • Own quality: Write tests across the pyramid (unit, integration, end-to-end, and UI automation) to keep extraction safe and regressions visible.
  • Use AI as a force multiplier: Apply AI tooling as a normal part of the work: codebase analysis, scaffolding, bridging legacy and modern systems, and low-risk refactors. AI is core to how this team operates.

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation
  • Strong base salary
  • Profit sharing program
