About The Position

Walt Disney Imagineering is the creative force behind Disney's theme parks, resorts, attractions, and cruise ships worldwide. Imagineers combine storytelling, art, science, and technology to create immersive experiences. The Show Lighting Department designs lighting for all guest-facing areas, including attractions, retail, restaurants, displays, landscapes, and facades. This department supports various WDI divisions and park departments, aiming to create entertaining environments that enhance Disney stories through the medium of light. The Senior Show Lighting Designer will report to the Manager- Show Lighting Design. This is a Project Hire position with no guarantee of permanent placement.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in a related professional environment required.
  • Experienced Lighting designer capable of producing designs which reflect both the theatrical and environmental nature of a WDI product.
  • Proven ability to work on multiple projects and drive results.
  • Ability to communicate lighting intent and ideas verbally and visually.
  • Working knowledge of theatrical design and technical knowledge of lighting design and installation, including methods of construction.
  • Working knowledge of architectural and facility requirements and integration of lighting products into an attraction.
  • Knowledge of new and developing technologies in lighting.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Able to work well independently and in groups.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of theatrical lighting fixtures, theatrical controls, and control distribution including DMX and Ethernet.
  • Knowledge of LED lighting systems including the design of power/data equipment to control LED lighting.
  • Familiarity with BIM and CAD software and drafting ability.
  • Ability to operate and work off lifts, ladders, and catwalks at heights.
  • Appreciation and skill in the aesthetic processes of lighting and lighting design.
  • Domestic and International travel required.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience required.

Nice To Haves

  • Disney experience and background.
  • Knowledge of Lighting Previsualization Software.
  • Experience with Revit, AutoCAD, and Navisworks.
  • Master’s degree (Theater, Art, Design, Architecture) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Leads and supports the design implementation and lighting installation effort for the project, interfacing and coordinating with the project team, including Show Lighting Designers specializing in lighting control.
  • Works independently as a lead on multiple design projects up to the Land Level.
  • Creates Show Lighting Design Estimates and Lighting Work Strategy.
  • Develops Show Lighting database, schedule, dimmer panels, and Show Lighting drawings.
  • Directs in-field implementation of Show Lighting design.
  • Drafts, plans, and schedules control designs in concert with facility design packages.
  • Manages complex negotiations across diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Supervises and adheres to budget and schedule.
  • Develops and communicates Show Lighting design concepts.
  • Performs primary interface with electrical engineering disciplines to ensure placement of lighting design on electrical drawings.
  • Estimates, plans, and budgets control systems.
  • Works with supervisor to adhere to budget and schedule.
