About The Position

Axalta Coating Systems is seeking an experienced Scientist to join their General Industrial Coatings Technology Group in Huntsville, Al. The Senior Scientist will advance the fundamental understanding of coatings technology to support Axalta’s growth initiatives. This includes product design, development, enhancements, and modifications to improve coating performance and reduce cost, while also improving efficiency during manufacturing and application. The role reports to the Team Manager – Liquid Industrial. Requirements

  • Degreed candidates in science related fields with applicable formulation experience
  • At least 10 years of practical R&D experience
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in Coatings formulation is mandatory for this position
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), problem solving capabilities and the ability to work both independently and as a part of a team
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 20% of the time with possible international travel

Nice To Haves

  • MS/PhD Degree in Chemistry, Polymer Science or Coatings
  • An understanding of chemical manufacturing as it relates to coatings, resins or polymers
  • Knowledge of color/dispersion chemistry, resin chemistry, pre-treatments and corrosion protection
  • Fundamental understanding of coatings technology and capability of formulation optimization
  • Ability to develop and/or implement coating characterization testing methods, calibrate & run instrumentation and interpret results
  • Knowledge of design of experiment (DOE) techniques

Responsibilities

  • Lead technical programs related to product development and customer support within a team environment
  • Responsible for development and implementation of new product formulations across a range of coating technologies and General Industrial Metal markets, including initial definition with the customer, scale-up with Manufacturing and optimization of performance at the customer site
  • Work as an active member of cross functional project teams with Manufacturing, Product Management, IT and Sales
  • Interact with others in R&D, Sales and Marketing to propose new projects targeted to provide growth opportunities in traditional and adjacent markets
  • Apply statistical methods to investigate problems and analyze results
  • Organize objectives, set milestones and deliver results against aggressive timelines
