Senior Research Scientist- Robotics AI

Bosch Group•Sunnyvale, CA
•$185,000 - $215,000

About The Position

The Senior Research Scientist contributes to research projects at the forefront of embodied and cyber-physical AI, with a focus on industrial robotics for manufacturing, shop-floor automation, logistics, and material handling. The role conducts research and engineering in AI and machine learning, including computer vision, autonomous navigation, and adaptive manipulation, and explores vision-language-action models for factory reasoning, multi-robot coordination, and operational safety. The scientist works with global manufacturing engineering, plant operations, and product development teams to transfer technologies from simulation to physical shop-floor systems. The role implements research in Bosch smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0 platforms, engages with industrial robotics communities, and shares findings through publications, white papers, and patents.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Robotics, or a related discipline, or a Master's degree with at least 2 or 4 years of industry experience after graduation (as stated in the posting).
  • At least 5 years of R&D experience, or equivalent graduate research background, primarily in AI technologies including computer vision and robotic or automotive motion and behavioral planning.
  • Proficiency in one or more machine-learning programming languages, such as Python, C++, or Rust.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork capabilities.
  • Knowledge of machine-learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.
  • Hands-on experience in reinforcement learning for behavior or motion planning or other applicable contexts, and familiarity with techniques such as PPO, DQN, and DDPG.
  • A strong portfolio of publications in premier machine-learning, deep-learning, robotics, and computer-vision journals and conferences.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with real-world product development and deployment of autonomous systems.
  • Hands-on experience building and applying multimodal transformer-based sequence-to-sequence models, especially multimodal vision-language-action models.
  • Hands-on computer vision and deep-learning experience in areas such as multimodal transformers, multimodal language models, diffusion models, NeRF, Gaussian splatting, object detection or segmentation, 3D scene understanding, sensor calibration, SfM, and voxel or BEV grid-based feature representation.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and engineering in AI and machine learning for industrial embodied AI, including computer vision, autonomous navigation, and adaptive manipulation.
  • Apply AI technologies to manufacturing, shop-floor automation, logistics, and material handling.
  • Advance industrial robotics using large vision-language-action models for real-time factory reasoning, multi-robot coordination, and operational safety.
  • Collaborate with global manufacturing engineering, plant operations, and product development teams to transfer technology from simulation to physical shop-floor hardware and systems integration.
  • Implement research results to address industrial challenges and integrate reliable systems into Bosch smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0 platforms, including APAS and active production environments.
  • Engage with manufacturing technology consortia, automation communities, and conferences focused on industrial robotics and factory automation.
  • Document and disseminate research through publications, industry white papers, and patent submissions.
